I have been looking at Guns America and all the newer or new Colts are inflated 400-1000 over MSRP. Just crazy. Yeah, drives me crazy. I’m a 1911 guy and some of the colt prices are just nuts. Right now I’ve just got a 4” kimber but it’s a unique look and it shoots great! If you want a real trip for a gun with inflated value check out the fk BRNO. Cool gun, stupoppppid price. Check out Rock Island for great 1911's. Made in the PI & not very expensive but reliable and able to eat the hottest loads without complaint. I've owned several Colts - sold all quickly for S&W instead. Their reputation is far greater than the reality, IMO.

That thing was sexy and I can’t find it anywhere anymore. Cest la vie...

Most of my guns are Rocks because they’re made in the Philippines (hence I don’t pay double the cost - I got my 22 TCM Tac Ultra high capacity for just $600), and they’re really good guns. I’ve been thinking of getting a revolver from them as well, the M206 in 38 special. It’s less than $200 when on sale. I just don’t know if they do revolvers as well as 1911s.

I haven't shot their revolver, but I know other people that own them and like them a LOT. Another cheap but good option is the EAA Windicator. Super cheap but apparently solid little wheel .357. I'd own more rocks if they popped them out in stainless. Wisconsin turns into humidity stainless and the few non-stainless guns I have become a lot more work during that time.

I was a little weary buying a doublestack 1911, that wasn’t a Para, but its under $700 and has quite a few of the “extras” that people spend a lot of money on (skeletonized trigger, commander hammer, fiber optic sight....etc). They have great products, but not sure about their revolvers or shotgun.

rjodorizzi- I had a Rossi .357 a long time ago, but never tried a Windicator. Are they any good?

I've handled the EAA. It's steel (good) and has a trigger pull in DA that is actually more hideous than a Colt's. It's acceptable in SA but even then is longer than it needs to be. I'd bet a good smith could clean it up but by that point you lose the cost advantage. Taurus, over the past decade, has replaced all of their machine tools (they did the same at Rossi after the buyout) and as a result their QC has gotten much better and the products are very good for their prices. My Rossi lever action is very good and the Taurus 85 I had was good, I just found a used stainless steel S&W 64 4" that I liked much much much better

It's hard to complain when it's pretty tough and durable and gets the job done. I don't think it will win any beauty contest, but I've got a buddy who owns one and he beats the hell out of it and it still goes bang. I wouldn't hesitate to fork over the dollars if I wanted a cheap-o price but decent value revolver.

wlewisiii- yeah I’ve heard positive things about EAA revolvers from people who’ve held/shot them, while ironically all the naysayers were loudmouths who’d never even seen one, nevermind shot one. It’s funny you mentioned the Rossi Lever guns, cause I was talking to a friend yesterday about the Rossi Model #92. It’s chambered in .454 Casull, has a stainless finish, and holds 9+1 (if I remember correctly). The fit and finish were outstanding, despite all the negative whispers about them. My only real issue with my old Rossi revolver was the trigger and hammer being very gritty. I actually disliked revolvers after owning it, because I thought ALL revolvers were that “rough,” until I handled a Smith and Wesson that is! Then I picked up a Ruger and saw that it was just the Rossi I had.

rjodorizzi- We’ll I can’t argue with that logic! LOL I see your point though. For a truck gun, or something to use to teach newbies the double/single trigger, it DOES have its uses. Also the low price point makes it hard to say no. I don’t think it’s unappealing visually, and the grips look super comfortable ergonomically.

Gonna use it for home defense, since we’re now not allowed to own “rifle” caliber guns. I wish Armscor would make a semi-auto TCM rifle that would be my go-to gun at home for sure. TCM is just an amazing round for its size, and the ballistic testing so far has been pretty impressive to say the least (goes through body armor, doesn’t penetrate beyond 18 inches in gel, and makes mincemeat out of pork ribs - all in the pistol form). As for revolvers, what do you guys think about the hammerless SP101? ruger.com/products/sp101/specSheets/5720.htmlI’ve been thinking about it, and might switch to carrying a revolver (from my semi-auto 9s) in certain situations while I commute due to contact distance robberies amidst a crowd of people.

S&W makes a revolver with a nifty hammer shroud which is less likely to catch on clothing and whatnot.

I'm turning 21 in just a few weeks and I'm planning to get my concealed weapons permit and first firearm not long after. I'm thinking about a small-medium revolver for self defense and range shooting. Anyone have recommendations? My only criteria are reliable, simple and affordable. I don't want anything with a lot of bells and whistles. For the OP or anyone seeking a firearm that may be unfamiliar and or a ccw (conceal carry weapon) permit, I would recommend the following: Find a gun range with a good reputation that rents guns and offers ccw classes. Let them guide you as you rent/try some guns and determine what gun meets your needs. CCW Recommendations: Revolver: J frame revolver. Specifically, a S&W 442 (38 special) or a Ruger LCR in 38 special or 9mm. Pertaining to the j frame, they are simple and more reliable operation, yet only 5 shots. Check for cylinder rattle and know that reloading with speed loader or moon clips can be cumbersome and slow. They are bigger and thicker than many sub compact semi auto pistols. No "limp wrist" malfunctions. CCW carry in or out the waist band or ankle. Semi auto pistol: Sig Sauer P365 (9 mm). Currently, the smallest 10+1 or 12+1 9 mm magazines. It appears Sig has corrected issues of gen 1 pistols. You want the gen 2 pistols with Xray3 sites. As with any auto pistol, potential for "limp wrist" malfunctions if pistol is not held firmly. CCW in or out the waist band or ankle or front pocket ccw without "printing" depending on pocket size. I plan to own at least 2. Note: For front pocket ccw, the Seecamp .380 (6+1 magazines). If you front pocket "print" with a Seecamp, your pants are too tight! It is hand crafted and still considered the best of the best "mouse" guns, after all these years. Note: Gun safety first and foremost! Muscle memory that index finger to stay off the trigger until your ready to fire. You can never take back a negligent discharge. .....good recommendations in this thread. My recommendations are what works for me. However, if you have a choice, one gun does not fit all and all situations. Note: Added "limp wrist" malfunction comments for both the revolver (can't happen) and pistol (can happen if pistol is not held firmly).

I gotta buddy who's much more experienced with guns then I and I plan to go to the range with him on top of classes associated with the permits I need. Definitely not looking to run out and buy a piece as soon as I'm old enough.

The 6” version is very nice. Great choice! It’s a shame the TCM only comes in bolt action, but have you seen the Ruger PC Carbine yet? ruger.com/products/pcCarbine/models.html Not only can it take 3 different brand name magazines (including 9mm Glock mags), but it breaks down into two pieces and can be carried in a backpack, for hiking.....etc. I think the price is down to $599, or it could be less. I read an article that said (in the Philippines) you could legally own “carbines,” but I couldn’t find a date on the article so I kind of doubt it’s validity. The SP101 is a fantastic revolver, and I know quite a few people who carry them, but in the warmer climate you may want something a little lighter that won’t “print” while wearing thinner clothing. This S&W 640: www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/model-640 is 3oz lighter than the SP101, and has the same 2 1/4” barrel. Also the Ruger LCR: ruger.com/products/lcr/specSheets/5450.html has a slightly shorter barrel, and is 5oz lighter than even the S&W 640! So there’s no shortage of choices, but it comes down to availability, price, and your preference. One last thought, and this is probably redundant, but if you can you own shotguns then I just watched a review on the Rock Island 12ga semiauto. It only holds like 4+1 (I know your gun laws are pretty much restrictive on capacity) and it’s very lightweight for what it is. Just some food for thought, if any of it was even helpful 😁

As for shotguns, the VR60 isn’t available here yet strangely enough. I think they released it in the US first because it’s the bigger market. And no magazine restrictions actually, it’s more a caliber thing (and only very recently - two years ago owning 5.56 was allowed).

And no magazine restrictions actually, it’s more a caliber thing (and only very recently - two years ago owning 5.56 was allowed). Do you mean reliability for the Ruger PC, or another carbine? The reason I ask is cause I’ve seen 3 different reviews on it, and the only issue it had was with the 50rnd Korean Glock drum. Tim from Military Arms Channel did a review on it, and other than the 50rnd drum problem it ate steel ammo, hollow points, and even remanufactured ammo. Palmetto State Armory has some awesome deals on lots of stuff (ammo, AR parts, Firearms....etc), but they make a 9mm carbine that’s by all accounts super reliable, and it’s $549 palmettostatearmory.com/psa-8-9mm-1-10-7-m-lok-moe-ept-shockwave-pistol-black.html which isn’t a bad price at all! How strange that the VR60 wasn’t released in the Philippines FIRST, but I see what you mean about the US having the larger customer base. It’s still not fair for you though! Ya know, I read in that article I mentioned a few posts ago that the restriction was on any rifle round 7.62 and up, but again I didn’t know how recent or reliable that info was. My apologies for digressing here, but I meant to research the Rock Island .38 revolver that you had mentioned, but I didn’t get a chance to last night. I will check that out and let you know what I find, if you’re still interested in it.

Oh crap, I didn’t realize there was a “limit” on how many firearms you could buy. That kinda stinks, but looking at what happens when people stockpile weapons, I can kinda see why countries put limitations on how many firearms citizens own. *shrug* A revolver is a good choice though 😉
