Hi all.
I am attempting to make an XVa sword. I have made other swords, single handed XV, before using 40mm x 6mm spring steel. I cut out an XVa profile using the same stuff and, to be honest, it looks pretty flimsy! The steel is good stuff for a 33" blade but at 39" blade length it looks like a tooth pick. Would 50mm x 8mm be better? My gut feeling is yes. The XVa blank I have looks like an epee!
Thanks

My albion ringeck (xva) with blade length of 36.5 inches starts out arnd 9mm thick so youre probably right that 8mm is a better choice.

Yeah, that was definitely my feelings. Thanks. Would be interested in blade thicknesses of most swords.

Yup. Slender longswords like XVa, XVIIIb really need at least 7-8mm base thickness to work well.
If you are stuck with 6mm, you could make some XVIIIc though. Those are rarely more than 5mm at the base. Unsurprisingly so, given their width.

Thanks for the reply mate. I have no probs, at all, getting the stock. I have never made a long sword before. But all is not lost. I'll lose 6" of the top and still end up with a nice XV.
