I have a Persian M1909 coming in tomorrow. The blades in great shape but the hilts brass and wood show their age. I'm planning on using brasso to clean up the guard and bolster, but I'm not sure how to tackle the wood. Anyone have recommendations about what I should use and I should go about cleaning the wood and restoring its polish? I cant provide pics atm, but I will be able to tomorrow if that helps. Cheers!

i am not sure how it looks but if its just dull dirty, looks old, what you can do it i dont know whats it called but get the wood buffed a bit so it gets plain and even, after that you can use wood color for it to look the way you want and lacquer on top to protect the color and give it a nice shine, unless you want it Matt.

What was the original finish like, and how much is left of it?

I've been going minimalist and using soft, dry brushes lately on antique wood and leather hilt components. Old, fully dry toothbrush works great getting loose stuff off and slightly buffing surface. Then Ren Wax to protect, plus it gives that nice deep glow.

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

You might try linseed oil and a mild painters scuff-pad for the wood, followed by very fine grit sand paper. The oil makes the grain stand up a bit, so you can get a good finish. If there are any cracks in the wood, I've used Elmer's wood glue mixed with wood stain in small amounts to fill them in. MY RESULTS were natural looking wood grain after a light sanding. But, that's just for me....individual results may vary.
