So, having recently moved into a new apartment where I can't just put holes into walls willy-nilly I naturally was more conflicted in how to deal with my swords. Fortunately there were the 3M Command Hooks to the rescue. The 5lb ones have no problems holding up a sword, and make some nice discrete holders for vertically mounted ones. The swords are attached to the hooks by small loops of twine. For the vertically mounted swords this turned out very well, from the front you can't really see the hook or the twine. For the katana's I had to get a little more creative. I first tried hanging them using a similar approach, but it was quite ugly. Solution: Metallic spray-paint and fishing line. The fishing line didn't form a nice knot, so I had to put a glob of epoxy on it to secure it. But all in all the whole set up looks quite good when you take a step back. Hopefully this is helpful for someone else who laments not being able to hang their swords!

I'll certainly keep that in mind. Thanks.

Creative. I suggest to check the twine out carefully every so often in case subtle movements of the sword cut into it and weaken it to the point it would snap and the sword 'falleth'.

I would be more worried that there may eventually be bare sharps crashing down if the hooks fail. As far as the cord and fishing line approach, they are a fine solution I have used in the past but just hanging on a single screw or nail. I did though go with colored cord or ribbon. Put the knots at the back of the blade. Loops long enough to clear the guards width and bring the loops across the face of the guards putting the knots behind the blade.

I can attest to the durability of command hooks. It's actually exactly one year since I posted this on reddit: www.reddit.com/r/SWORDS/comments/66fnq4/on_sword_hooks_sans_wall_damage/I currently have even more hooks that that photo and none have failed me. For comparison, people have hung heavy mirrors that weigh at least 5 lbs with the weight being unevenly distributed from the top without failure.
