I mentioned my 22" Imacasa clip point machete in that recent machete vs. sword thread. Turns out I was mistaken - the plastic handle on an Imacasa is not hollow, although it seems less dense than the plastic on a Cold Steel. The D-guard itself is mere plastic and inadequate protection from a cut with another sword, but the blocky handle can be sanded or othetothe reshaped to be more ergonomic. The blade itself is light, springy, has a bit of distal taper and generally seems worth tinkering with. The tang is a little short, but plenty wide. I'm mulling over options for a cooler hilt than mere plastic. Wood and aluminum? Neoprene and paracord?

Hi RM.... It's been 2 years now, how did your handle project work out? I got a Ima a couple months ago, haven't done mods yet due to Covid closures, but pulling stuff out of storage now.

I'm afraid the blade is just sitting in my garage, unfinished. I tried a neoprene and paracord wrap but was unsatisfied. I think the ultimate solution will invovke a riveted hidden tang in a wooden handle.

Wooden scales riveted to tang is the traditional way to go. I’m still trying to get use to the rubber grips and scales. I say rubber but I believe technically they are plastic.

If they were a dense rubber, I'd probably have left them. The plastic was uninspiring.

Try it with "scales" made of one or more thickness's worth of saddleweight leather. (You can also do a rawhide and/or cord and/or thin leather overwrap afterward.) VERY comfortable and easy.

True plastic sounds uninspiring but I learned that many things that I thought were rubber are another form of plastic, flexible, non-slip, soft to the touch in varying degrees but plastic. LeMal’s post reminded me that I have a machete with scales made of an auto tire. It works well.
