It occurred to me that Hanwei's 1881 Shashka might have some very good modification potential. By removing the brass bolster and replacing it with a traditional guard, one could essentially create a saber more in the style of Hungary or Poland. Below are pictures of the base shashka, and what I'd be going for instead. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how this would turn out? Any input appreciated.

The Shashka blade is descended from earlier saber styles. Also if you would look at the sheath it is almost identical in shape to some of the earlier sheaths found in eastern Europe. I chose to make a tatar saber my self because the shashka blade is almost exactly the same if you get rid of the recasso like I did on mine. If you look on ebay at times you can even find authentic "karabela and scimitar hilts that do not have there blades.

Yep, should work quite well. The Russian M1881 saber that the Hanwei shashka replicates is a helluva fine sword.

Did you ever finish it? If so I would like to see how your saber turned out. I see you had this idea way before it came across my mind.

Nope never did. I got the Hanwei Shashka and was so let down by the handling I ended up returning it. I don't mind some forward weight, thats what one should expect in a saber after all, but that shashka just felt like a baseball bat next to my others. I was surprised cause its stats wouldn't suggest that, and I've never seen a bad review. Maybe mine was just a dud.
Although, in other news, I have a karabela being made for me now using the CS shamshir blade as a base.

I would like to see that saber you are having made when it is done. I had a CS shamshir but the blade cracked after i hit the cap on a bottle I had a lemon for sure.
