Alright, apologies for the break everyone, had more health stuff to take care of. I did read everyone's comments and had a chance to think it over though. I'll start by responding to celegon 's comments first:
I totally get what you mean about the design changes and lost in translation. My passion for swords comes from a historical perspective so that's how I approached this sword. First and foremost I wanted to make sure every element performed to a high standard and within historical parameters. Additionally, all the small details have the potential to add cost the production and by extension the consumer. BUT we also want to create an offering that the community is really interested in and does justice to the design that inspired it. So, I've disassembled the sword in order to make some adjustments:
-I will be adding the brass ferrules/risers back to the design
-The pommel right now actually has a cross section very close to the image you sent, but with the softer material, the ridge gets "rounded over" easily during polishing, giving it a flat appearance. Instead, I'd like the hollow grind the bevels to make the ridge appear more pronounced, as it is in your design.
-The waisted grip still puzzles me, in the original artwork it sort of just looks like risers(since it's a 2d view) so if you had a reference image for the type of waisting that you mean, that would be very helpful
-Hilt length: I took measurements from your original artwork and found two things; first that the guard in the image seems to be about 8.5", rather than 7.5", but also that the grip is 1.6" wide down its length. That isn't unusable, but it would be uncomfortable for most small-average sized hands. So definitely the combination of the shorter guard, pommel and narrower grip might give the sword a disproportionate look. A lot of people have also commented that the hilt is just too long for the blade. So aside from making the grip thicker and waisted, I'm also going to cut an inch from it.
-There was a comment about the quillons being too plain, and I think that may be the case after I add in the other details. So I'd like the bevel the quillons starting at about where the edge of the blade meets the guard; they'll have a diamond cross section rather than square.
I think I got everything. Hopefully these changes make the sword a little truer to Celegon's design and spark more interest in the project.
Let me know your thoughts, and thanks!
