Hoping to pick up another Grosse Messer here within the next week or so, and will then mod the one I currently have. Been playing around with photoshop, and thinking I might go either of these routes. Kinda wondering if I should have the hump on the back a little further up the blade though, and possibly a little more of a transition. Not sure if I should leave the guard straight, and twist the ends instead. Either way it should be fun, and I'll be sure to post progress

I have it too and I'm always thinking of how it could be reworked to be a real kriegsmesser. The straight guard is right, but the blade is too broad and too heavy. It's like a much shorter Langes Messer blade simply expanded. I think the spine has to be grounded down a bit to have the hump at the guard you mentioned. So you get a slender blade with a better clip point tip, perhaps with another hump before the tip.

Yep, I'll be grinding down the spine. Never worked on a blade this long, so should be interesting. I'm thinking I will go with the hump before the tip too.
I really wish there were a more kriegsmessers readily available, but I like a good project.

My czech ones are between 1,7kg and 2kg... and in the museums we have weapons that exceed 3kg! The Pavel Moc is by far the lightest: 1,4kg. There exists a historical correctness aside from Albion and distal taper! I am searching right now for the material to proove this... "Eill bi beck!"

But are the originals tapered in a way that makes up for the weight? For instance, there are many repro sabres that are 2.5 pounds, and yet smaller or more clumsy feeling than an original of larger size and heavier weight.
I'm willing to wager the CS falls short in the taper department, and edge profile possibly. Perhaps even the tang tapering as well.
I wouldn't use modern made anything for reference on original pieces.

I don't care much for historical weight, the CS - regarding its lenght - is a bit too blade-heavy for MY TASTE. The weight or better the mass distribution is "andical" incorrect! I like my CS but I also think there is space for improvement.

Do i believe that distal tapering is automatically historically correct? Not in a 100 years... we were not there, we havent seen everything. Neither has Albion, or anybody else. Falling short in edge profile department? Not a bit; at least on mine have what i would call a super-flat half-diamond cross section - no secondary bevels at all. The planes are straight... so no "niku", nor hollow-grind. What i dont like on the CS is its overall "too modern" look... i alwas see a sword from WW1 or some steampunk movie when i look at it... especially the rivets. So i just wrapped my grip in boxing bandages and weathered it a little...

By the way, to the OP: your customising suggestions look great - i would have made that guard-bending thing ages ago but i just dont know how!

I have thought about sending mine to Driggs for a complete new hilt.

It could also be modded to a straight dao like Lancelot's Longship swords.

Yeah, it seems like there a lot of complaints about the CS's weight, but I don't mind it at all. I'm still new to swords, but it feels great to me. In fact, it's because of this sword that I am now completely infatuated with the Kriegsmesser/Grosse Messer/Lange Messer swords. By the way, to the OP: your customising suggestions look great - i would have made that guard-bending thing ages ago but i just dont know how! Thanks Holg! I'm going to play around with some scrap steel a bit before, just to make sure I have it down first, but it shouldn't be too bad. Just need to be patient, and not try to rush it. I'll try to remember to take pics while I'm working on it.

Ha! Interestingly enough I'm finally getting around to a similar mod (though going slowly, w/ my Dremel)! Though I've made the suggestion on another thread or two before over the past years. Just the blade profile though, leaving the guard alone. Guess I'll have to share some pics as I go.
"Great minds think alike," eh? ;)
Most intriguing perhaps, I'm getting the strong impression the weight reduction will be just enough, taking it down to ~3 lbs, to make the Grossy easily usable in one hand.

Would love to see how yours is progressing. As others have said, the weight really isn't out of line as is (and hasn't bothered me one bit), but I agree that the bit of weight reduced by this mod will make it easily usable in one hand.

The CS Grosses Messer resemles in lenght and blade design rather a single handed Langes Messer than a two handed Grosses Messer or Kriegsmesser. For its size it's too heavy, so reducing the weight is a good idea and makes a better weapon anyway.
