It certainly looks interesting, but it also looks like it will weigh a lot. On the other hand, it will certainly handle differently than your average gladius, which is not a bad thing all considered. Well...I prefer my 3+ pound swords to be a bit longer than a gladius (fantasy, or otherwise). This is one of my biggest issues with "fantasy" swords. It's like that label is usually just short-hand for lazy design and/or execution.

Or just less practical design that carries extra weight over more historic specimens.

For me, it was about creating a symbolic sword that had a function based around the area of use and spiritual practice. Danu is an Irish Goddess, so it made sense a leaf blade would be used, and the moon-like motifs would be used as practically as I could imagine them to be. While intended as a hand and a half, which would have been pretty heavy (though great for shield bashing), the shorter version makes a more sense in a practical way. I don't think it should be very heavy

I am sure Admin. Knows their sales data well. Therefore, fantasy design winners must have been chosen in part, due to that sales data. Yet, if the designs were directly marketed to at least 15,000 subscribers and no sales, what some suspect may be true. Although nice designs, they may be too extreme and unique to sell to many? Around 2009, SBG members designed a fantasy leaf blade and bastard swords. Swords were made by Baltimore Knife and Sword. I do not know how well they sold. They appear to be based from medieval sword designs. Most pics no longer work. But this is what I found. Here is a pic of the mega wide blade base, fantasy leaf blade sword: Here is a link to the fantasy leaf blade review: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/23977Two versions of the leaf blade, a standard and a great sword Here is a link to the fantasy leaf and bastard swords Review. Provides specifications for both swords. No working pics but a cutting video works (leaf is in first part and bastard is in second part of vid): sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/18727Here are some pics of the fantasy bastard sword: Here is a cool link to the SBG Fantasy Sword Project, with good sword pics, on Baltimore Knife and Sword's website: imakeswords.com/sbg.htm

I either forgot about those or never knew about them, but that's a super wide blade... I'm kinda intrigued, but eh...

I am not in the fantasy sword market, but that blue and bronze number is a contender.

It was that long ago? No wonder I don't remember it.

EHRMAHGERD MEHR UPDEHTS Castir: 2. Aelutian Gladius: 1. 2. Both of these are starting to look interesting. But especially the Castir if it's sharpened on the concave side of the blade. One I could use as a fantasy falx would be awesome. (And the fact that I submitted a fantasy-falx type of design to the contest has nothing to do with that. Nothing. ;) )

Can not post entire SBG Fantasy Sword Project webpage from the Baltimore Knife and Sword site. So, here are some pics from that page: Again, here is the link to the page: imakeswords.com/sbg.htmWould be interesting to see if tweaked versions of these swords could sell to current SBG digest/newsletter subscribers. That bastard sword looks pretty cool.

It would be cool if someone would set up a thread with voting polls, pics and descriptions/specifications of the current first 6 member designed swords AND the 2009 fantasy swords (bastard, standard leaf blade and great sword leaf blade) for a total of 9 swords (9 polls, 9 sets of pics with descriptions/specifications. Put a deadline for poll voting for swords we would actually buy (could vote for multiple swords if liking enough to buy multiple swords) and then see the results.

To be honest, that would have been the best way to choose the winners in the first place. It would have likely produced winners that would have been more difficult to produce, but they would be selling better.

The whole fantasy blade via BKS was a bit of a debacle. Pulling up the old design as a model effort and result just overlooks how sour the whole thing turned a year after promises were made, excuses overlooked.

Edel - Voting poll purpose could be to determine which sword designs are liked ENOUGH to actual BUY at a certain price point. Choices would include extreme fantasy to medieval fantasy. The how, who and when of manufacturing would not necessarily be included in the descriptions. The exercise would be to determine sellable sword designs. Although, past efforts and issues could show what to do and not to do to ensure a successful project. If you get lemons, make lemonade....or something like that. Haha!....eh.

I fail to see why promoting the earlier SBG fantasy "voting methodology" would then yield a greater market than what is already in the works. Drumming up interest in this thread has shown some interest. Prove me wrong by buying one of each yourself and in a year, let me know how many participating in this thread buy any. Swords have been projected and only lack in sales interest. If you mean to include the older SBG designs as available to be part of this drive, that seems to also miss the mark as to the original intent and concern as expressed by Paul, in his first post. Be honest. Of all the swords in all the threads you have posted to here at SBG, I have read of many you simply adore and would like to have. Of that number, how many have you purchased? If I am posting as negative in this thread, it is as a reality check for those making plans for others. I can have some faith in the current producers of this particular project but in bringing up BKS, don't forget the past.
