I must admit, I didn't really like how the Vorpal Sword looked like when I first saw it in the winning announcement (it looked too mundane, and there were much better designs, IMO) but it kind of grew on me once I saw the WIP pictures. It definitely looked better than the sketch, hahaha!

If I remember correctly, it was meant to be a hand-and-half sword, but for some reason it was changed into a short-sword (bad idea, IMO, and I can't remember why it was changed.) And then, BCI went off the earlier design specs, since the new short-sword design didn't have its own specs resulting in an extremely wide and squished grip. That grip was once a LOT wider than it is right now.

a bit of thinking lead me to think about how i would "fix" the missing fantasy part of these swords a bit of google fu found people had already made designs that worked to illustrate my point, first off the "gladius' lacks the look of a gladius, no guard and pommel to speak of just slabs of wood and metal, could be better done by looking more clasical (yes i know its an "early one ) something more like this gives a functinal sword with fantasy styling, next the goblin sword putting it bluntly its too neat, people think gobin they think messy, nasty, dirty more like this looks mean and dirty, for me goblin swords should look like they stole and repurposed other blades or they should look rough forged, shouldnt be well made and lovingly crafted as i dont believe that fits the psych of the d and d goblin now the orc king war cleaver , first not a cleaver (clearly a dao) second again not orcish enough in the world post lotr orc weapons again should be nasty dirty and mean eg: same basic shape but definatly a cleaver and definatly fantasy and evil again no offence meant to designers

I still think the Orc King is a possible now that I found the specs on his website. I can see myself using it for chopping brush, that way I get the job done and scare the heck out of my neighbors too. Can also see wearing an Orc mask while doing it. I don't care about dismal taper on this one, it's a meat cleaver not a sword. I do think the price is a little high looking at similar swords on his site and would have to get what's in the picture. Unlike what happened with my Strider Knife where it came with a plain reddish brown handle instead of the tiger maple shown and a blackened blade instead of the silver one shown.

If I can afford it when it's released I'm going to be all over that vorpal sword.

Hey Guys, According to the limited feedback on this thread and the actual review of the Goblin King Sword here I would have thought that these swords would have been at least a LITTLE bit popular.. But sadly, despite offering a limited pre-launch of the these three swords and promoting it via the Sword Buyers Digest to 15,000 subscribers and 6,000 members of the store newsletter, we have sold just one of each design.. THE DESIGNSThe Early Aelutian Gladius - $329.99The Sword of the Goblin King - $284.99The Orc Kings War Cleaver - $284.99 So my question is, why are these just not on anyone's radar? They are hand made in the USA by Chris Palmer who is a Manufacturer and Vendor of many years good standing at the forums, were designed by forum members, and are priced just below or just slightly above the $300 price point. Yet, for some weird reason, the silence is deafening.. As we were hoping to use the meager profits from the sale of these swords to get the necessary funds to actually launch the dedicated website (which also has a LOT of input and work from SBG members) and cover the cost of actually making the swords and sending them out free to the people who designed them. it is quite disheartening to say the least and does not bode well for the project generally.. :P So if you like the designs and have been considering, what is it that holds you back from actually pulling the trigger on them? I have priced them as low as possible, done my best to give them a compelling backstory and we all know that Chris makes really tough, fully functional blades.. So what is it that you think is the reason why no-one actually wants to buy them? Personally I am at a loss to explain it.. Any and all feedback is more than welcome - for right now we have sunk over $10,000 into the development of this project, and was hoping that we might be able to get enough funds to actually launch the thing. But alas, we are now kind of stuck in limbo.. Don't pull any punches, I need to know to make this project a success.. - Paul The designs are nice, but they're not really my preference. If they were longer and in medieval based fantasy, I'd jump for it.

Just in case some of you are wondering how first 4 winning designs look like right now: The Modern Aelutian Gladius: The Sword of Danu: The Vorpal Sword: The Castir: So yeah, some of these swords are more finished than the others but all of them are not finished yet. Just thought I'd give an update to those who are interested in these designs. Plus, Paul never told me not to share these photos* and I assume the designers got constant updates from Paul on each of their designs. . Lemme know what you think of them. IMO I think BCI pulled off the Vorpal Sword and Castir designs flawlessly. They both look better than the sketches we drew up. *I have (limited) access to the website currently under construction. Paul invited me to help with the world-building. I like those. They look like functional and well thought out and engineered swords while being unique looking in the market. For instance, I can't buy something that looks like the Castir, and the Gladius looks like it belongs in Skyrim or a "historically inspired" fantasy. Depending on the price point I'm definitely going to try to pick up one of them. Also yes I think BCI did the designs justice, but that could also be me just seeing them in steel for the first time.

Seeing a couple mentions about using more famous designers (like John did with the Odin's Oar for this very fantasy project), I want to follow up with a couple questions (and this is purely out of curiosity and not based on any discussion I've had with Paul):
1. Would you be willing to save up to buy a higher end, expert designed and manufactured fantasy piece? 2. If so, what would your cap be for something high end, assuming there was ample time given to allow you to save up? Do you tap out at $1200? $2000? $3000? Gimme dat sword and you can have my kidneys? 3. Since there was some mention of not being invested in this particular fantasy world yet, would it help if legendary existing designs in the sword community (purely for example, something like John's Celtic Wolf or Sword of Peru, or any of Jake Powning's pieces) were licensed to be tied into the fantasy world?
Any market data helps, especially with this pretty painful slowdown of the sword market of late.

Especially if we were given ample notice prior to presale so that we would know to start saving. 2. $1000-$2000 would be my range. 3. I know Longship has done this already, but if there was a "budget" run of John's Guardian design where buyers could choose a few different options (like how the Verrimus was sold years ago) I would be all over it!

The biggest reason I see why these swords are not selling is there are no stats. I'm not going to buy a sword by picture alone and no stats and I think my sword brothers and sisters here aren't going to either. The stats were on the SBG store from the beginning, you just have to click on the tab. It is easy to miss.

Not to pop anyone's bubble here... But I know why the sales are flat. WE NEED A GOOD ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE! I bet that would boost sales. (and I'm broke at the moment...)

I'll just echo what's been said before. The blade designs are good, but the fittings are so pedestrian it leaves them looking half-finished. The fittings on the first four winning designs look much better, more like I'd expect to see in a fantasy themed piece.

Would you be willing to save up to buy a higher end, expert designed and manufactured fantasy piece? For me buying a higher end sword requires a couple of months lead time, as only able to buy a couple of swords a year, I missed out on the Serenity as I had just made another big purchase just prior to the pre-order, I know everyone likes small batch sizes but is very disappointing when you see a sword you want, but all 10 are already sold. 2. If so, what would your cap be for something high end, assuming there was ample time given to allow you to save up? Do you tap out at $1200? $2000? $3000? Gimme dat sword and you can have my kidneys?Depends on the sword and manufacturer, I purchased an Odin's Oar because I have a few Longship / Odin's blades already, I know what to expect in terms of quality and handling, $2500 - $3000 is about it for me, at this price would maybe make two purchases a year. 3. Since there was some mention of not being invested in this particular fantasy world yet, would it help if legendary existing designs in the sword community (purely for example, something like John's Celtic Wolf or Sword of Peru, or any of Jake Powning's pieces) were licensed to be tied into the fantasy world? For me would be a yes for a "Celtic Wolf" or "Glawar", and again yes for Jakes Powings "Dagfinnr" not looking for exact copies but that level of quality.

For instance, I can't buy something that looks like the Castir... That's a shame. Something wrong with the real-life look?
