It has been my experience that Windlass knives are very well put together and extremely tough. This particular knife is one that I would have considered a delicate design, however, it took the abuse like a champ.

I have a windlass bowie. Diff model. I was quite impressed at it's fit and finish and durability at chopping up wood!

Good blade, anyway; the guard could be harder or more robust to avoid bending like that - but then, I guess it's not meant to stand up to this kind of abuse, anyway. I'm quite impressed with their Hunter's Companion (AKA Sheffield) Bowie, myself, especially at its very low price point (the savings are mostly in the crappy sheath, I think). It's larger and heavier than the Mexican, right in that delightfully confusing grey area between big knife and small sword; mine at least also seems to be better tempered than this one and holds an edge quite nicely.

I really need to get a couple of their bowies (Hunter's Companion is at the top of the list, along with the 1880 Bowie). My brother bought a bare blade made by MRL/Windlass, and we did all kinds of hard use testing with it. Handled the testing just as well as my ESEE 6. I think Windlass knives are a great deal for the price.

I have two Windlass Bowies, different models. No complaints here. They are holding up great.
