So, I've come around to Kylo Ren's lightsaber and I'm wondering if it could be somehow made in sword form as a representation. Obviously, I could just pick up a H/T bastard sword and call it a day, but I think better could be done with some thought. So here's what Im wondering: 1. Can you color steel red without weak material or shoddy finish? 2. Can you have a sharp crossguard you wont kill yourself handling? 3. How long do you think? All my sources conflict between under three feet to almost 5. 4. How about the grip and pommel? Only a cap? A faceted pear shape? 5. The blade shape would need to be thin, but still an effective cutter, any comparable shapes on the market? Please give me your thoughts to the above questions or just in general, I'd love to hear them. Cheers!

I've seen a number of illustrations of swords designed for dueling in full harness that feature sharp and pointed crosses, weaponized pommels, and very pointed blades. I'll dig around and see if I can find them.

I don't think grabbing a light sabre by the blade would be a viable fighting technique ? :) Oops..call me stumpy ? :)

Well the illustrations are more for the sword, not technique, lol

Hmm, so you can get red(ish) steel, though I dont know how that effects the quality of material or finish. One possibility I was thinking was a long fullered blade where just the fuller was red. So you would have the appearance of a long thin red line, but with enough mass to still cut effectively.
Also, instead of replacing your guard with daggers, how about just grinding down an Albion Gaddhjalt style hilt to points?

This is truly the most evil mustache of them all! @elbrittania that's what is suggest doing, if not making them very small spear tips. Doable but difficult. As for the blade maybe a type 20? Make a good cutting sword I bet.

I guess it's a coating, mes amis, only in the fuller is possible. I like the idea of a switchblade crossguard.

This should give you an idea of what it can handle. Not perfect, but better than paint for sure.

Well, I was bored. 125cm overall, 25cm grip+pommel, 25cm guard - Vadi should approve. A type XVIIIb blade with a straight, sharply tapered cross of hexagonal cross-section, both of red steel; you could do the color with titanium adsorption or some sort of industrial coating. Hollow-ground hexagonal scent-stopper pommel of blackened bronze with a red peen block, grip and tubular rainguard of black leather. Could maybe use some subtle bronze highlights, small rivets and such. Compare with the official prop:

BTW, whatever method you'd use to color the blade, it will not stand up to use - but on the other hand, that might not be a big deal, since Kylo's saber in the movies is severely beat up and abused so visible wear and tear would just make this more accurate.

Now that's not a bad plan. A contrast of bright steel shining through cracks in a field of red sounds pretty cool to me.

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

MOK---I think you just kinda NAILED THAT! I'd own one, just for the hell of it and to make my other swords feel weird. Or, ''sullied and unusual'' as Cap'n Jack would say.

Thanks, all! I'm fairly happy with it, myself. Now that's not a bad plan. A contrast of bright steel shining through cracks in a field of red sounds pretty cool to me. Exactly - it should both look cool and reflect the jagged, unstable "blade" of Kylo's saber. For that matter, I think I'd go for somewhat heavy "weathering" all over, for a scarred and worn look with the bronze and tan leather showing through around scratches and on high spots.

Perhaps handle the sword whilst the die is curing? I think it would really need to be very worn to complete the look. Alsooo, I'm thinking that aside from the coating, this wouldn't be a hard project. Get a HT blade, a printed armoury pommel and grip. Find a crossguard or just modify an existing one, perhaps Lemur would be willing to fabricate one? It would have to be tempered to be functionally weapony to me.

Agreed. Perhaps handle the sword whilst the die is curing? I think it would really need to be very worn to complete the look. Yeah, or just genuinely rough it up afterwards. Maybe put on a pair of those potato peeling gloves for a couple of hours of drills. I'd indeed absolutely want a cross like this to be of forged and tempered steel, not cast. Mind, ideally the blade should really be hollow-ground to ensure it retains some of the coating in use...
