So, as the title states, this was my first major alteration to one of my swords. Well, other than cold bluing a cheap ebay wakizashi several years ago. I've always thought the pommel on this was a little large, and a lot heavy. It just so happened that I recently acquired a belt sander, and needed to learn how to use it. It actually came out much better than I had expexted. What do you all think? Edit: For reference, it originally looked like this www.kultofathena.com/images/501144_5_l.jpgSome less than stellar footage of the process.

That’s a good looking job. How did you get the flats so flat?

That’s a good looking job. How did you get the flats so flat? I took off the pommel for all of the work. The sander has a small table. First, I held it vertical against the belt to get a flat spot. Then, I placed it sideways on the flat to get another at 90 degrees. Once I had four small spots, I was able to adjust by hand to even them out and eyeball the remaining facets. I've got some footage, but it needs to be edited waaay down.

It's the steel on the inside that counts.

Great job! I've heard folks say that particular sword was a bit heavy. Shaving off a little weight could only probably improve it.

Very nice job! I actually prefer that a lot over the original version, so I'd say you did absolutely everything right Very clean work on those pentagon shapes. That pommel geometry has become a lot more interesting with those! Did it change the handling of the sword in a significant way or would you say there wasn't a noticable impact? I mean, the original pommel shape sure looks heavy!

I'd imagine it will, since I knocked over three ounces off the back end. Still fairly heavy.

I know others have shaved and taken parts off the ROBUST guard.

Did it effect the POB by much? I know others have shaved and taken parts off the ROBUST guard. Not by much. Probably less than an inch. It's still very near the guard, which is my next target since this went well. I can probably shave several more ounces there.

I'm feeling a lot more confident doing this kind of work now. I'll probably soon find the line where that becomes overconfidence, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Really great job. I'll buy that pommel from you, if you ever want to let it go! And you can have my Windlass Munich pommel as part of the deal.
