Access USA aren't really in the Christmas spirit it seems..
They have been increasingly difficult over the years but now seem to have found a way to screw everyone who tries to send a Katana with Rayskin..
Here is what people are being told:
Basically, they want anyone who tries to ship a Katana with rayskin to pay $340 for an export declaration that the rayskin is not an endangered species (same thing that hit Cheness) and were requesting the genus, species country of origin and status of the animal used..
For anyone interested, the genus and species is Trygon sephect (Cowtail Stingray) which is typically used for Shagreen in Asia.
Some additional information on the Rayskin and their status: www.kingsmerecrafts.info/page25.html
According to CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) which have three documents known as the CITES Appendices — Appendix I (507 named taxa), Appendix II (259 named taxa) and Appendix III — Stingray is not included in these appendices and therefore legal for commercial use and trading throughout the world.
The Cowtail stingray (Trygon sephect) and the Spotted stingray (Trygon kuhtii) are caught by traditional fisherman for meat, and the skins were previously discarded. Both species are neither endangered nor threatened. They are abundantly found in the shallow and muddy warm waters off Indonesia.
So in short, it is an offcut of a waste product from an animal that is legal for commercial use and trading throughout the world and not endangered - but seems they found their excuse to stop sword exports because they are too PC or whatever it is these days (wimpy Hopliphobes!)
As such, I would recommend that anyone who has an access USA account close it and look for a different provider - as they clearly do not want our business. My page has been updated with this new info accordingly.
Merry Christmas Access USA. I sure as heck will never recommend you to anyone again and hope they lose a nice chunk of business over it.. May want to spread the word as a boycott on Facebook or what have you - it's just stupid of them..

Here is what people are being told:
"The following item requires that we file Form 3-177 (Declaration for Importation or Exportation of Fish or Wildlife) before exporting to you"
[Insert Name of Katana Here]
We will apply for the export declaration with USFWS on your behalf for a fee of $290. This process may add up to three additional days to the processing of your shipment. This shipment will also require additional export documentation which has an additional fee of $50."
