Hi. I recently received this sword from my mother, who had it from her grandfather. All she knows about it was that he was a Commander in the USN and that he picked it up somewhere in Southeast Asia around the turn of the century. I was hoping to get some input on the specific origin, if you can help. The closest I was able to come was that it looks sort of like an Indonesian Klewang, but the tip doesn't seem right. Any thoughts? Pictures attached.

These are usually described as "Berber sabres", from Morocco. However, there are many Caribbean examples, so all that can be really said is that they're Spanish colonial. I haven't seen any Asian examples, but given the Spanish presence in the Philippines, it isn't that unlikely for one to have found its way there. See www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10636 for examples and discussion.

Well, considering when it's from, he might have picked it up anywhere, he was in long enough to become a CDR at the time. Thanks for the pointer as to its origin!
