My EDC is a Springfield XD compact in .45 ACP. 10+1 and not noticeably larger than a Glock 19 (their semi compact 9mm).
Fantastic piece and meets both your needs I think

The HS2000 I paid for was the 9mm XD compact equivalent (16+1) but I can still have it changed to .45 (13+1). Still not entirely sure I should go for the 9mm given the scarcity of good 9mm JHP.

Purely preference. I have 9mm, .40 and .45 semi autos. I like all of them. I happened to get a really good deal on the .45 XD compact hence why I got it. It replaced a Glock 22 in .40 as EDC and that had replaced a SIG P229 in .40. Actually probably going to also get a Glock 19 or SIG 320 in 9mm as an alternate. I don't get into the caliber War too much. I love all 3 main auto calibers and shoot all of them well. Though all things being equal I am most accurate with either 9mm or .45. But I do love .40 too. In the case of my XD it was purely a "I got a heck of a deal on a special pistol NiB." I paid $250 NiB for my XD compact but it was in .45.
