Howdy folks, long time no see!
I haven't been doing much sword-related stuff lately, but with a bit of time off I decided to get this done. I've had this sword for a while now, in its original form - the blade is a HT Longsword, and the pommel and guard were made to my specs by Yeshuas Sword a while back. I also have a plain grip from him, but it didn't really have the look I was after. I've been into kinda rustic-looking swords since I did such work on a Windlass Sword of Roven and after seeing this with a bit of storage-related surface rust, I decided it would be a good look (and more protective than bare steel) for this one. What I had in mind for the look of this sword was hedge knights of Martin's mythos, or an impoverished knight-errant. The inspiration for the hardware was type XVIIIe swords, though with fantasy-level latitude in design.
I sanded the pommel and guard smooth and removed the spot rust from the blade. Then, the pommel and guard were given a dark patina using gun blue and steel wool, then waxed. A new grip core was carved from poplar. I then wrapped the core with jute cord, added three turks head knots, burnt off the fuzzies with a torch and finished by soaking the cord with superglue, giving a hard finish.
The scabbard will eventually be in the same theme of course, though I'm not entirely sure how to accomplish it. I have some oiled leather that would make quite a rustic-looking, utilitarian scabbard covering, a bit more jute for accents/risers and perhaps some kind of 'token' would be good for the look. I also have a Scottish single hander in the same style in the works, but I'll leave that til it's done :D
Thanks for looking!
Pete
