I picked up a windlass pompeii from the classifieds. The handle seems really skinny, 3/4 inch betwwen the finger ridges, 1 inch at ridges. Is this normal or small?

Measuring some drawings of antiques, that looks about right. 3/4" to 1" variation between grooves and ridges is more variation than most (and deeper grooves are common on repros), but the average thickness is about right. About 7/8" or 0.9" is usual, front-to-back (so, if oval-shaped or flattened diamond, they'll be a bit thinner side-to-side).
As long as the grip is a good length, so that your hand fits snugly between pommel and guard, a skinny grip is good. It should let you hold it securely (with the support of the pommel) with a relaxed hand. Skinny means your fingers can be closed around it while your hand is still relaxed.

Yes the hand is tight between pommel snd guard but when i close the hand feels like something is missing. Maybe a squared or diamond shape be better for me. A side note the tang on mine is skinny the larger welded rod means a good fitting handle cannot be removed without destroying it.

a good size for a Gladius grip is 3 1/2" hands down. The Guards and the Pommels were designed to help you lock your grip on your glad and to have a better balance overall. Even if you have a wide palm anything bigger than 3 1/2" is too wide of a MAINZ, FULHAM, POMPEII, or HERCULANEUM Sword.
