Paul, on my screen, the map is about 21cm wide by about 17cm tall; I think a decent scale could be about 4,100km wide by about 3,000km tall, that'd make the distance from Paragonia to Pomedica roughly 680km. This would make the whole map more or less on par with continental Europe, at least to the Russian border (mainly because Russia is kinda hard to define where it stops being in Europe and starts being in Asia). If nothing else, it might work for a starting point. If my quick estimate is some what accurate that would put the length from the bottom right of Lhasa to the left corner of Silverleaf by the Border of the Elven Homelands at appxly 6000 miles. I like it, This would allow for plenty of encounters and each section or country is a large tract of land with gradual changes in terrain and weather.

Forgot to add - what do you think the scale of the continent should be? As a rule, it should be pretty big - to get the scale maybe we should determine what the distance is from Paragonia to Pomedica. Bearing in mind the map is somewhat abstraced - towns, etc ate not necessarily to scale and even on the close up maps, they only mark truly significant cities, towns and large villages. Hamlets, small villages, minor forts, etc are too small to be marked on the map. Thoughts? How about the size of Europe, from Scotland to India. Then the Aleutian Empire; Tuath Dé, and Lhasa could be "Asia-sized." Lhasa is already split into Provinces....like China! That's not a numerical comparison with "miles" and "meters," (not like the U.S prepares its children for the metric system!) but you mentioned the map being abstracted, so I thought maybe a "real life" example wasn't SO Non-fantasy.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. There will be more continents added to the world later, but they will all be peripheral to the main story.

Just another quick slightly random entry for D&D fans, below are the alignments common to each major nation on our continent. Naturally within each country there will be people of all alignments, but the alignments provided below are considered to be the ideal or the 'default' alignment based on culture and history of each given region.
ELVEN HOMELANDS: Neutral Good SILVERLEAF: Chaotic Good KINGDOM OF THANE: N/A LAND OF THE DEAD: Neutral ESCIA: Lawful Neutral NORTHMEN: Chaotic Evil POMEDICA: Chaotic Neutral ALEUTIAN EMPIRE: Lawful Good TUATH DE: Chaotic Good LHASA: Neutral BADLANDS: Chaotic Evil STORMWATER: Neutral Good

Because, in a world where the Lich King is smooshed in between "living" neighbors, if they all saw him and his nation as a threat, they could obliterate his "people" if it came to "Land of the Undead" vs the World! The Lich King might survive ALL the surrounding nations attacking at once, but he's pragmatic enough (or at least that's how I see him) to realize that his people would NOT. Besides, with eternity on his side, his TRUE plans/intentions would only be known to his closest advisors and Undead Paladins (Thanks Andi!) and they're not talking to anyone!

Warring amongst themsleves, and of course they don't give a rat's behind for people from other lands, since they go raiding, but they're not inherently cruel. In D&D terms, generally evil creatures get satisfaction from harming others in a perverse, sadistic sort of way. While that often works for orcs or goblins, an entire nation of humans like that seems a little far-fetched to me. Other than that it looks good to me.

The northmen as a people with families etc. shouldn't be evil, but their raiders can be, what was just the name...vulcans?..., no!

I'm not sure about the scale but this is sorta what I had in mind i wrote this about a week ago and planned on having a mock up map done by now but that mapmaking too messed up on me and I have to redo it but here is the description. What I had in mind was a place incase we wanted to do pirates or jungles. I know the current map should be filled out but this is an idea for another land mass to the south. The Northern end of the land mass would be very marshy ,with lots of little scattered islands off the cost. The islands and swamps would be a pirate haven. As you go farther south the swamps turn into dense jungles which few have ventured into as it becomes more and more dangerous as you go south. Deep in these jungles live a warlike civilization whose stone temples have stood for an age. Also in this jungle would have exotic creatures found nowhere else in the world, such as great jaguar like cats. And possibly thunder lizards that were left over from an age long past. how far does this continent go? im not sure.. the size could be adjusted depending on how big of a world you needed right now, it could stretch far as the south pole, with. vast southern wasteland desert then turning into ice.

In regards to either Storm Water or Silver Leaf, neither has any backstory or even an explanation of local government. I very strongly propose making one or even both cities a Bastion for magic. If people are harassed, hunted, or even attacked, because they are seen using "unauthorized" magical spells, one of these two cities has an invisible (Called a Mythal in Ancient Moon Elf) an almost tangible shield of powerful elemental energy surrounding it that keeps non-magic wielding creatures of ALL races from entering without the express permission of The Council of 12. If on the run for crimes NOT committed, a person enters either city and are granted asylum till they can use their gift of magic to prove their innocence. The city was made BY magic, it's policed BY magic, it's even CLEANED daily BY magic, and most importantly ruled by The Council of 12 (made up of 2 Necromancers, 2 Illusionist Wizards, 2 Sorcerors, 2 Summoners, 1Witch &1 Warlock, and 2 Twin Elemental Wizardsthat are really male Silver Dragons in disguise. If Silverleaf is chosen than that would help improve relations between the Elves from the Elven Homeland to the North, and the beleaguered Aleutian Empire, who is pretty much cut off from any help the north of the continent "could" hope to provide. But WHICH city should be the Bastion of magic.....or should BOTH be the safe haven for all who've inherited the gift?? That actually sounds a lot like the Sorcerer City of Notarikon, before it was destroyed and taken over (then rebuilt) by the Aleutian Empire. I don't know how the Empire runs things in Notarikon right now though, they probably use the city as a center for practicing magic with lots of rules and regulations. Perhaps also a council of Arch-mages but all of them are Imperial (or all of them are human, no elves nor dwarves. Human supremacy FTW). (Notarikon used to be its own city-state much like Escia, but then disaster happened). We still need to know a lot more about this world from Paul's own design table. What I want to know most is whether this is gonna be a website collecting a bunch of stories from us forum members (ala Kit Rae's website), A Tabletop RPG Series (ala Dungeons and Dragons), some form of web novel or perhaps something else entirely...? I hope Paul can weigh in soon.

Congrats to the winners of round one! I wish my blade had been chosen, but that's ok and I'm content to be helping with world building for now!

You can still possibly win prizes with world building I think. Might be an excellent way to increase your odds. Plus more swords will be chosen for a round 2 I think, so never know if your gonna be chosen for that round

Yup, there is a very strong chance for round 2. The basic gist is that if one of the countries, etc makes it to the final edit of the World we are making, that it is only a matter of time before your design gets picked for a later round win.
And yes, there are going to be some surprise bonuses and rewards for contributors. The more you put in, the more you will get back! :-)

Quick question! I missed this whole thing, so, if there is a round 2 will you be accepting new submissions for it?

D your the Man like I said! I did have one request on a character but haven't really submitted it yet. He, as a token gift from an "Over-God," was given the power over Chaos. He's elevated beyond "Good" and "Evil" deities but as the Master of Chaos he's neither "God" or "Demi-God." He's something else, but his absolute control over chaos (what an oxymoron I know, but part of WHYhe's SUCH an intriguing character. His name is Lameth the "Dark Messiah" because his control over chaos makes him a possible savior or the damnation of the world. Just a character concept. He's NOT a deity, but he is immortal, and his powers almost always neutralize the forces of Good OR Evil....if one seeks to tip the balance into his territory....Chaos, he is there to "even" things out so to speak. He's got no ambition for world domination, he's just like a "force of nature." And he possess an O-Scimitar comprised of spirit energy.....which was the ONLY +6 weapon in my campaign....making it a "God-slayer." It'll also give you the option to introduce Chaos Mages if such a thing interests you. D&D did actually have a " chaos-sphere" for priests to dip into, and a school of sorcery called "Wild Magic" What do you guys think?? Nice...Lameth, the Dark Messiah, is a Fourth Generation Vampire from Clan Cappadocian - he, and Anis Queen of Night, achieved Golconda by artificial means. Lameth is the main character from Robert Weinberg's MASQUERADE OF THE RED DEATH TRILOGY set in Vampire: The Masquerades WORLD OF DARKNESS.
