A very quick update (the one you all have been waiting for) - round one winners have been announced HEREA new sub board has also been created and this discussion will soon be moved over to there accordingly. Thanks to everyone who entered and contributed and remember - even if you were not chosen for round 1, there are so many great entries that there will be a round 2 and quite possibly a round 3. So it ain't over yet folks..! Update you all again soon. - Paul Can the folks who didn't win update their entries with additional pictures and details, if they want to?

By the way, when are we gonna start designing characters and the peoples of the Fantasy World (most likely working name: Elatreus)? Are we gonna have another thread for this?
I sure as hell can't wait for this part of our world-building quest.

I think the winners can start their stories now or wait till the world is fleshed out. I believe there are others here who would like to write some stories also even though they haven't won. No-winners stories would also help flesh out the world and make it seem a more tangible place.

Well of course everyone's welcome to write their stories in the world. We just need a place to post them (I believe Paul is making a website for this).
Honestly, I'm just really interested in the kinds of characters everyone will make for the world. Should anyone make a thread for the fantasy characters?

You can place one in the Cafe. It can always be transposed to another thread if needed.

Right now we are putting all the threads for this project in a dedicated sub section of the Sword Design forum here. New topics can be started by anyone there, but we should keep each thread on track with a single subject as much as possible. I just added 5 new sections to it with 5 new maps and kingdom descriptions/places of interest as below: The Badlands Western Kingdom of the NorthmenTuath DeThe Mysterious Kingdom of LhasaCentral AleutiaI have also updated the worldmap to version 1.4. Differences between this and the previous map are as follows: - ? land to the North of the Land of the Dead has been identified as the Kingdom of Thane. More on this Kingdom later..
- Tauth De is no longer frozen and is more like 'Ireland' that it is loosely based on.
- Temple Nimbus is 'free floating' so where it was previously marked on the map now can be found the Windkeep Fortress, which is the largest Fortress in the Empire and is the staging point for the continuous war against Escia.
Only minor tweaks, but the world is slowly taking shape enough that I will soon be able to create the dedicated website where all the brainstorming and ideas will be turned into a bedrock foundation. So please, for general brainstorming - this thread is fine. For something more specific, it is best to find or create a new section in the dedicated sub forum. Ramses1079 will be helping to coordinate everything and will be promoted to 'SBG Project Coordinator' within the next few hours. So let's try and keep the momentum going. There was a question that I cannot quickly find again from someone who asked if they can flesh out their entry even if it did not win. The answer is - ABSOLUTELY. Indeed, the more you flesh it out - the more attractive it will become when it comes to round 2. And every story submitted can find a place in the world too, so the sooner you add your stories, the better it will be for everyone.. I will need to take a few days off from the project to concentrate on other SBG stuff that needs my immediate attention, but will pop in from time to time to make sure things are running smoothly, provide updates, and further coordinate the world building.. So have fun guys, the more we do here the richer it will be in the longrun. At its worst, the site that will be born from this project will be like Kit Rae's website - which is great. But it could be so much more greater. If we do it right, it could even become a pen and paper RPG setting..! Just imagine how cool it would be if in addition to a backstory of one of the swords we designed, we could also provide a generic dungeon where the sword can currently be found.. Only time will tell how far this project will go - but how far it goes now depends on you guys. So the more ideas and content we create here, the merrier.. Talk to you all again soon! - Paul

i wrote this about a week ago and planned on having a mock up map done by now but that mapmaking too messed up on me and I have to redo it but here is the description. What I had in mind was a place incase we wanted to do pirates or jungles.
I know the current map should be filled out but this is an idea for another land mass to the south. The Northern end of the land mass would be very marshy ,with lots of little scattered islands off the cost. The islands and swamps would be a pirate haven. As you go farther south the swamps turn into dense jungles which few have ventured into as it becomes more and more dangerous as you go south. Deep in these jungles live a warlike civilization whose stone temples have stood for an age.
Also in this jungle would have exotic creatures found nowhere else in the world, such as great jaguar like cats. And possibly thunder lizards that were left over from an age long past.
how far does this continent go? im not sure.. the size could be adjusted depending on how big of a world you needed right now, it could stretch far as the south pole, with. vast southern wasteland desert then turning into ice.

had an idea re the missing dwarvern race/races, what if we flipped the traditional view on its head and put then in an area of little or no metal, and have what they have reserved for the high cast members of the society priests, nobles, high level warriors etc this would mean that they could be some what similar to the aztec or mayan people instead of them looking like short vikings as most fantasy depicts them , their strength and resilience developing from a harsh life in mountainous or jungle environments this would also mean they would be expert wood carvers/ bone carvers and or flint knappers, especially if there environment contained animals that had bones dense enough to make a formidable weapons from, instead of the stereotypical metal workers that everyone thinks of, could be that they are a society at the beginning of their technological journey and could have beings like this wielding things like this i imagine a macahuitl swung with dwarven power would be devastating First off they're not "missing" just subterranean ! I'm sure once we get the "above ground" stuff down pat, it'll be time to "unearth" subterranean races......especially my FAVORITE race: The Drow.....or dark elves for those of you not familiar with them. There are also "evil" grey-skinned dwarves callled the Duergar, and one of my favorite "Lovecraftian" Villians: The Illithids....... In regards to your twist of the dwarves (non-duergar) being "hoarders," they're actually like that anyways....especially with rare, and special "property possessing" metals like Mythral. They even fight amongst their own people over "who's tunnel and rockpile is "who's, sometimes even spilling blood over ownership disputes. That's why Mead, and spirits are prohibited in Dwarven land negotiations, even till the present day! 😏

Celegon, I'm liking the ideas of exotic animals in the jungle region.......perhaps something like a "Dire Jaguar"......which is exactly the same as a "regular" jaguar, just four to five times the size, weight, and strength. Jaguar are generally solitary creatures, unlike Lions who hunt in Prides.....but maybe three of four females could follow/breed with one Alpha Dire Jaguar. Can you post your ideas in the Bestiary Section??Thanks bro!

Ramses1079 Hey do you think we could have our own thread for characters and their design that we'll eventually write into the fantasy world? Not entirely sure if I should make one without approval, I'd rather have a moderator do it.

Everyone can introduce their characters.....even place them in a atmosphere specific region TO their character specifically. Pick one of the foundation cities where your character would BEST fit, or be at home in. As the outside world is built up and progresses everyone's characters can start taking their first tentative steps out side of their "Origin" city and stretch their legs in the newly evolving world. How's that sound?? 😉

In regards to either Storm Water or Silver Leaf, neither has any backstory or even an explanation of local government. I very strongly propose making one or even both cities a Bastion for magic. If people are harassed, hunted, or even attacked, because they are seen using "unauthorized" magical spells, one of these two cities has an invisible (Called a Mythal in Ancient Moon Elf) an almost tangible shield of powerful elemental energy surrounding it that keeps non-magic wielding creatures of ALL races from entering without the express permission of The Council of 12. If on the run for crimes NOT committed, a person enters either city and are granted asylum till they can use their gift of magic to prove their innocence. The city was made BY magic, it's policed BY magic, it's even CLEANED daily BY magic, and most importantly ruled by The Council of 12 (made up of 2 Necromancers, 2 Illusionist Wizards, 2 Sorcerors, 2 Summoners, 1Witch &1 Warlock, and 2 Twin Elemental Wizardsthat are really male Silver Dragons in disguise. If Silverleaf is chosen than that would help improve relations between the Elves from the Elven Homeland to the North, and the beleaguered Aleutian Empire, who is pretty much cut off from any help the north of the continent "could" hope to provide. But WHICH city should be the Bastion of magic.....or should BOTH be the safe haven for all who've inherited the gift??

I gave a back story about stormwater, but I'm not sure if it should be used or just condensed.its really up to whatever is best for the world we're building
the main settlement in stormwater is a town on an island in the lake called "lochtown" the rest is farm lands with a couple of forts to the north.

Once Paul registered the domain, we'll post stories there.

LOVE the idea of Jungle Dwarves who have not discovered steel yet. Dwarves in our world then would be more barbaric, bad tempered and - perhaps like Warhammer Fantasy Role Play - have a culture where when disgraced they seek out death at the hands (or claws/teeth) of the most powerful monster possible. Naturally, when such dwarves come to the Empire, they tend to use modern weapons and armor - but may start as a Wilderness barbarian kind of thing..
SIDE NOTE: There is no real reason why Dwarves were not given a territory in the world as it is taking shape other than bad memories from the group I used to play with hassling Dwarf NPCs. One case in point during Shadowrun (set in the year 2060 when Magic has returned to the world) the elf PC met two Dwarves for a job and after brief introductions said something along the lines of "It is only a small job, not very big. But it should be a short run, with little risk ofof a firefight. The pay is $10,000 - you guys down for something like that?" - that and endless puns about ladders.. But I digress..
Stormwater will indeed be based around Celagons' story of the Giants and men forming an alliance and the sword of the river guard. Generally speaking, magic is not outlawed or forbidden in the Empire and young people with potential are scouted by mages and taken to the rebuilt Noktorikon for training.
Outlaws tend to find their way either to the Badlands, Foshan (pirate/outlaw island off the coast of Lhasa) or Pomodica (large theives guild there).
Please do create as many new sections as needed - this is the time to throw any and all ideas into the hat. We will find a way to incorporate everything into the colorful and lively world that is becoming more plasuible with every new story arch.
Also, if people could go over to the locale posts and add in their $0.02, flesh out locations that are a little dull or add new twists, please do so. A couple more maps should go there soon, but would like to see people contribute to those threads before adding too many more new areas.
Keep up the good work folks!
- Paul

Forgot to add - what do you think the scale of the continent should be? As a rule, it should be pretty big - to get the scale maybe we should determine what the distance is from Paragonia to Pomedica. Bearing in mind the map is somewhat abstraced - towns, etc ate not necessarily to scale and even on the close up maps, they only mark truly significant cities, towns and large villages. Hamlets, small villages, minor forts, etc are too small to be marked on the map. Thoughts?

Paul, on my screen, the map is about 21cm wide by about 17cm tall; I think a decent scale could be about 4,100km wide by about 3,000km tall, that'd make the distance from Paragonia to Pomedica roughly 680km. This would make the whole map more or less on par with continental Europe, at least to the Russian border (mainly because Russia is kinda hard to define where it stops being in Europe and starts being in Asia). If nothing else, it might work for a starting point.
