I've had a PTR-91 for a few years now, but I have so few places to fire it. My state is actually very "gun-friendly" but I don't know anyone who has enough land to shoot it on. All the indoor ranges around can't handle .308's so I kinda bumming. Anyone have similar tales of woe??

I've a few .308s (AR-10 platform, and a CETME which is basically the same as a HK-91). Thankfully I live close enough to long ranges and country, though getting time to go shooting has been rare of late. I actually am dying to break in the barrel on my SIG-556R.

I'd HIGHLY recommend an HK91 or "variant".......if you can handle the meaty punch of a .308. The CETME was my first exposure to .308, but a lot of people I deal with, in either federal agencies or local police depts, suggested saving up the extra $$$ and getting the PTR if I couldn't get the actual HK-91. Now see, the advantage to where I live is that the Sig Sauer headquarters is like 25 mins from my house, so I know how awesome the 556R is.....besides which, 5.56/.223 is SOOO much more affordable then .308 Ammo, so your choice was a good one!

The 556R is the 7.62x39mm variant. I am not a fan of the look of an AK, so this lets me fire the round (and use the same magazines), with SIG precision. (I have quite a few SIGs and love them). The CETME is the same thing as an HK-91. Only minor differences. But I have been eyeing a PTR-91 or building one off as many HK parts as 922R will allow me to.

Yes, finding a place to shoot as well as feeding the beast are concerns. I purchased a Springfield M1A standard and am just sitting on it, but it is pretty to look at.

I will say the fluted chambers on the HK/PTR/CETME makes reloading brass a total pain...

Plenty of ranges here, though mostly in mountainous, hilly places or excessively flat plains between valleys. Naturally means I need to travel about 3 hours to them. But once you get there.... 🔫🔫

Used my Uncle's McMillan M1A. Didn't feel my shoulder for 30 mins after but it was a blast😁
(Come to think of it, I really don't have weapons of my own....😢)

Oh the joys of big bores... many years ago I fired a custom Siamese Mauser in .45-70 with handloads tuned for the stronger action. Never had anything beat me around like that thing did.

The only rifle that would leave my shoulder black and blue was a reproduction .45-70 carbine. H&R made them for a few years a long time ago. But I also had a Ruger No. 1 in the same caliber that was much better to shoot. It had a decent butt pad. The only rifle I ever fired in the army was an M-14 and I didn't think it had much of a kick at all. Likewise an FN-1949 in .30-06 (which I bought through the mail) wasn't bad to shoot, either, and it had a steel butt plate. I also had several Lee-Enfields, all with steel butt plates, and none of them were as bad as the Springfield reproduction. One of the Lee-Enfields was a jungle carbine, which had a rubber butt plate. But it was so narrow and so hard that it was barely worth having. It did kick harder, though, but not enough to bruise. It might have had something to do with how much shooting I did with it.

My Mosin Nagant M44 carbine made quite an impression the first time I fired it. That steel butt plate and 7.62x54R are an unforgiving combination.

Exeter---one of my bucket list guns is a lever action 45-70 (Marlin) So I feel your pain.....literally LOL
Blue train-- The 30-06 beats out the .308 so you definitely deserve a. Medal for that one 😉 Mr. Bad Example-- The Mosin's were one of the most deadly and prolific rifles ever made. Besides the AK of course.
I have yet to fire the "Big Boys". Like the Socom 458 and of course the .50!!!!
Edit: I DID shoot a .500 S&W, Yowza!

Hats off to you ramses... after my .45-70 experience I'd hate to contemplate something like that in a semi-auto action. At least working a bolt gives you a bit of time to reflect on whether you really want to do this again..

Oh I pay for it alright, don't think I haven't felt the "donkey-kick" these big bores give us foolish enough to use the semi-auto platforms. Bolt action users are smarter for taking things one shot at a time!! Plus I'm not getting any younger LOL
