Edwin purchased this RSW from us and sparred with Dicky. It was his first time using the single handed sword.
I figured I may give him a demo how I would use it, so here it is, me vs Dicky.
And then I sparred with Edwin to see how he would use his single handed sword after seeing how I did it. Since I don't want to go too advantageous against him, I picked a katana which has a shorter blade length than his sword.

An interesting technique with the one hander.

An interesting technique with the one hander. I use a lot of "short powering", so not much winding up. Thanks for watching. :D

The one hander seems to offer more reach (with similar sized blades) because your shoulders aren't squared by the other hand on the blade, and you do have that guard for hand protection. All other factors favor the two handed. I would love to see a proper off hand dagger given to the one hander, and see how it would perform against a two hander, but give the two hander a longer blade (because two hands can wield the extra size).

You're correct in your assessment. Your suggestion will be a good potential match setup in the future! :D

I just saw your vid with someone using a large shield with sword vs a larger sword. I think a proper pole arm (Halberd, Billhook, Naginata, etc...) vs a large shield and a one hand sword with handguard would be the top of the food chain. That large shield would be a game changer. Of course, we left armor out of the equation, and this would GREATLY change the variables, as I would go pole arm with heavy armor.

With pole arm with heavy armor, you're one general / knight on the battlefield. :D We sometimes spar in modern armors (street armors) that can protect against glancing to medium hit. Solid blows will still counts, so I won't get totally lazy on defense.

Of course, the heavy armored knight with polearm was probably undone by firearms (and the long bow, interestingly), but they really got around on horse, as you wouldn't want to bum around the countryside in such attire with polearm in hand.
