Hey guys, Been a long time I posted on these forums. Actually, since back when we were on the old forums. My last sword purchase was the Hankie Tinker 9th Century Viking Sword and I have been beyond happy with the purchase. I am in the market for another European (Medieval or Dark Age) sword, preferably in the sub-$200 category, but I am willing to go a bit ($50) above if it means the difference between quality or not. Here is what I've been looking at so far: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2369&name=Hanwei+Henry+V+SwordI love the specs, but watched a Youtube review and the guy said the finish was not desirable. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2426Again, I like the specs, but haven't found any reviews on it, yet. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=MSW176S&name=Renold+SwordReally like the aged look of the Renold, but no scabbard (under $145 extra!) is a ding on my specs sheet. www.museumreplicas.com/p-1637-viking-ulfberht.aspxLooks great, and has good reviews, not sure how I feel about the aesthetics. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH6966R_DLX&name=Triple%2DLobed+Godfred+Viking+Sword+with+Deluxe+Scabbard#www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH6952R_HG&name=11th+Century+Viking+Sword+with+Integrated+Sword+Belt#Listed these together because they are very similar swords. I have read bad reviews of Deepeeka, but also some not-so-bad reviews. For the price, it may be worth giving it a try. I have inquired with Kult of Athena about sharpening possibilities because it's not offered on the website for those. Let me know what you guys think of these, as well as any other European (Medieval or Dark Age) swords in the sub-$200 price range. Thanks!

If it was me I would go with the Deepeeka Godfred, because I'm into Viking swords and because that scabbard is worth the $135 alone. Plus the peened two piece pommel with wire inlays. I would regrip it and do a little engraving on the guard and pommel. I have a Deepeeka Viking sword and it's not a bad sword for the money, I've seen worse for a lot more. In fact the only thing stopping me from ordering it myself is I won't buy a Viking blade less than 2 inches wide but prefer 2 1/4 inch.

There are some Windlass models which should be available in that range; absolutely preferable to that trashy Hanwei product line. I kinda like them, but these are the real "sharpened crowbars"! Check this out: www.kultofathena.com/swords-medieval-br-price.asp

The Hanwei-Tinker line swords are really nice - I haven't heard a lot about the Norman, but I imagine it is impressive. The specs look really good!
The standard Hanwei lines leave a lot to be desired sometimes. The one you linked the video review of - I can speak to, because I own one. It's a fun little onehanded thrusting sword, but not really the most viable thing for cutting. The PoB is close, but it's still very heavy (for its size). And, of course, like all Hanwei medieval(even the factory H/Tinkers), sucks.

Having just got a Norman and have used a H/T long sword they are both good handling swords. The only caveat is that they should be sharpened up to get a better edge for cutting.

The only thing I don't like about the Norman is that is pretty much the same sword that I bought previously: the 9th Century Viking. Same scabbard, same grip, same steel, etc. The guard and pommel are the only changes (and the blade). I really like the Hanwei Cawood Sword right now, but its on backorder and KoA couldn't give me an estimate. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2457#

Norman blade is very different, making it a very different sword.
I wouldn't really experiment with Deepeeka on a type where Hanwei makes far better swords which aren't that much more expensive.
The Cawood is good. Also, you can explore the classifieds there are some real bargains there on Windlass, Hanwei, Gen2 stuff within or near your budget.

I am a big fan of the Hanwei Cawood. Great handling & good looking sword that is an okay copy of a particular sword of historical significance. The polish isn't fantastic, and the leather is unnecessarily orange. Still, it would be my pick. fwiw
Edit By the way, Viking Shield advertises them at a somewhat lower price than KoA (!). They are also sold out, but they had them a week or so ago. Maybe they will restock soon.

I found a company that offers the Cawood in stock, but they only have one left. The only problem is that it's $350 out the door compared to $300 out the door on KoA.
Do you guys think it would be worth it to pay the extra $50 now and get the sword for sure or hold out and wait and see if KoA gets them back in stock?

I assume you meant 350$. That's really up to you. I know some of the popular Hanweis (Hello H/T Longsword!) are never back in stock... but I'm not sure how long it would take for the Cawood. If the H/T line is any indication, could be months.

If you have money to spend on a luxury item like a sword, I would say to worry about which sword you get, but not an extra fifty bucks. If they don't restock for a long time, you miss out on a lot of fun-having.
However, if you have a budget, I would advise sticking to it. As stated above, it's up to you. I suspect you will not be disappointed in the Hanwei Cawood, even at $350. (Unless you have to play with it in the dark because you spent your utility bill money on it 😜)

Yes, I did mean $350. Haha
Contacted CAS Iberia. They said:
"The Cawood is still being produced we are simply out of stock. We have a few of the swords coming in from Hanwei at the end of the month, but not enough to satisfy current backorders.
It has been a very popular model lately and has been difficult to keep in stock.
Thank you, CAS Customer Service"
I guess I'll wait. I would really like to order from KoA again because they've been good to me in the past.

There's a lot I'd great Windlass swords in your asking price of $200-$250.
Are you looking for something more along the lines of a arming sword or Longsword?

Arming vs. Longsword is not a big issue for me. I guess if I had to choose, I'd go Longsword just because of my HEMA background.
