No price limit. Considering buying a Windlass sword. Which of their swords do you believe is worthy of the warriors of old?

There is no such thing as the “best” sword, that is subjective. Another thing, especially with Windlass, is due to the variations in their swords no two swords are exactly alike. Sorry, I know that is not what you are looking for. However...

I have/know a few windlass swords, nice cheap swords, but not "worthy of the warriors of old". In the "General Discussions" (not a Sub Board) is a topic about the "Top Three Windlass Swords".

So after a thorough read, I'm deciding between their Ulfberht and Suontaka Viking swords. Thoughts?

The Ulfberht has a good reputation. I like my discontinued type XIV. Like someone said watch the Deal of the Day and remember with you promo code you get an additional 10% off.

So after a thorough read, I'm deciding between their Ulfberht and Suontaka Viking swords. Thoughts? I'd take the Ulfberht over the Suontaka. The Suontaka maybe prettier but the stats pretty much guarantee a better handling sword in the Ulfberht. I agree with others though and will say there's not really a best Windlass Sword as many come in different shapes, sizes and types. It really depends on what you're looking for and what you're preferences are in sword type, handling and construction. For example most Windlass swords are peened but some come threaded or with a retention nut. If threaded are not in your preference for example you'd be eliminating quite a few swords from their lineup and vice versa. It's probably best you find the sword most to you're liking and then asking feedback from members. For example some could say the best Windlass sword was one of their Rapier but if you're not into Rapier then you're not really getting what you're asking.

Ulfberht or Suontaka, norman or viking. What is your idea of an ancient warrior? Riding a horse attacking an anglo-saxon shieldwall or jumping down from a viking longship for some business in foreign villages?

I, myself, like my Windlass German Bastard sword. I ordered it sharpened at a great price on the DotD, and it has proven to be a solid piece and a great cutter. I could live without the side rings, but that's just MY nitpick. I like the longer grip on the single-hander length blade. Good for me...maybe not everyone's cup o' tea though. ...Chris

As for those side rings, to me that’s a big selling point as they greatly increase the safety of my hand. At first I found them cumbersome during the carry but picked up a baldric on the DoD pushing the hilt forward enough so that the rings did not get me in the side as with the vertical carry. The rings along with the 11 ¼” wide quillion bar might be giving me a false sense of security but that is the reason I bought the sword.

I personally adore my Sword of Roven. Just got done polishing it today, and honed the edge a little. Excellent sword for cutting. Looks nice too.

I've owned somewhere between 30-50 Windlass swords... and handle most everything they make as I live only 90 min from their headquarters in GA. So, what follows are the best swords they have made in my opinion. The Oakeshott Type XIV, Coustille, German Bastard, Sword of Roven, Scimitar, Ulfberht, and the Cbra Style line are a great value if you like Tacticool weapons.

my favorite windlass atm is the blacksword and the classic hoplite sword, the blacksword is really cool but scabbard is sht, hoplite sword is very pleasing to my eyes and the only windlass with a snug scabbard

Definitely echo much of this, particularly the Cobra line, XIV and Ulfberht. (At least of what's available. They seem to often have discontinued MANY of their best in the past. ;) ) Haven't handled the Roven but it seems a nice choice under good consensus. Scimitar is excellent, but I'd buy the CS Shamshir version (same blade) as it's formed plastic handle's less prone to splitting. To these I'd add the Raptor (most definitely) and the German Falchion (pretty decent).

The Immigration sword doesn't seem to be on anybody's radar. Got it cheap on ebay and was shocked at how well this sword handles. Too many of the mastercraft swords are dumpy and/or glitzie. (The reichschwert really pissed a lot of us off as they made a sales gaff and said it had the correct 37 in long type 11 blade. Got it in the mail and it had the typical Windlass 33 inch, type 18 blade.)
The ulfbert is a classic. Can't go wrong with it. Some other places in the world to look for Windlass classics you won't see at MRL:
Southern Swords (UK) Iron Gate (Finland) Lawrance Ordnance (Aus)
Have fun

To change the subject slightly, today MRL has the Falchion on sale at $85.50 w/promo code. Not a bad deal.
