I have a new house with a new yard, and a partner who is at least marginally okay with me building a training eyesore in our backyard. What I don't have are some solid plans of what I want to assemble.
At the very least, I want a heavy, rope-wrapped pell post with some amount of heavy-duty vulcanized rubber near the top (read: tire). However, in my mind's eye I've envisioned some vaguely humanoid contraption with strong wooden limbs and heavy spring joints and/or a motorized quintain like device with with multiple blocks and strikes programed into it (i.e. a robot sparring partner).
Before I try my hand at Jörg Sprave levels of suicidal mechanical/industrial design, I would like to see if anyone else in the community has some fancy-pants training equipment designs they will share with me.
So...do you?

Hi Zen, I have the hardware store special at home. I used 6' tall 4x4 post, lined the sides with 2" foam pipe insulation, and wrapped the whole thing in yellow 1" twisted polypropylene 'marine' rope (rot and water proof, since this lives in the back yard). I made a stand using four 2' 2x4 boards, screwed into the base of the 4x4 post. I think the final rope total was something like 120 feet, final diameter of the pell is about 10". The only pic I currently have is one from during construction last fall, when I realized that I had nowhere near enough rope to finish the job. It was pretty ugly at this point, but you can see what I was doing with it. By the time I had finished, I'd added a "cap" made of rope that let me practice strikes to the top of the head, and wrapped the rope coils to just below the level of the pipe insulation. The final wrapped target area was a little over 4' in height. I'm considering taking the whole thing apart, and removing the pipe insulation. As originally planned, I thought the extra padding would be helpful in reducing the shock of strikes on the blade, but I've found that it causes entirely too much bounce when striking full speed. I'm having a problem with the blade "skipping" when I strike. Considering that I just have foam under the rope, I don't know what hitting actual rubber would do- I would think the skipping issue would be worse? Edit: Future plans for the Pell- I think I want to drill out a section so I can add a 'sword' to train against. I'm thinking a 1" drilled hole, with an armature made of PVC pipe to hold a waster mid-zornhau.
