Hi,
i have a couple of scabbards (leather w wooden core) and i would like to add some lining. What are the best options for that ? I have some felt but im not sure if that would cause rust ? Sure almost every lining will wick away whatever oil i have on a blade but does it rust more easily ?

I've used both felt and shearling wool to good effect.

Felt will wick some oil away but is decent long term. Shearling is good as is synthetic fleece. Both will keep the oil on the outer surface so it will remain in contact with the steel.

i have a couple of scabbards (leather w wooden core) and i would like to add some lining. What are the best options for that ? Historical linings include linen, wool (fabric), felt, sheepskin with wool (cut short; AKA shearling), fur. How to do it? You need to pull the scabbard apart. Separate the halves of the core, line, and put it back together. How closely the scabbard fits the sword will affect your choice of lining. I have some felt but im not sure if that would cause rust ? Sure almost every lining will wick away whatever oil i have on a blade but does it rust more easily ? You oil the lining.

You'll need to be very particular about your choice of glues. Some craft glues will dissolve once exposed to the oil saturation, causing the liner to come away and jag at the blade. Some types of wood glue (titebond 3 in particular) are quite acidic and will discolour your blade at best. Then there's also the fit aspect - weather the scabbard is loose enough to allow all that extra material in there. Velvet is another option for a finer pile textile. Personally I tried lining scabbards and quickly abandoned it. I think you're better off correcting a loose fit with some bulking around the throat, be that a strip of textile material, leather, or building it up with a layer of epoxy. :-)
