Fortunately in Canada, we don't have knife fights; just hockey fights. And all the vomit is absorbed nicely by the meter of snow outside.
It's actually quite inconvenient. I live in an apartment and I do all of my handy-work on my balcony for safety reasons. Only problem is that for 6 months of the year I'm blocked inside because of the stupid snow. Like a true Canadian, though, I have spent evenings sanding scabbards outside when it's below freezing...

Thats what the lab is for :P Belated thanks to @uhlan for sharing. bfoo2 has his Swedish sabre along similar lines - I cannot recall whether it was as long as yours, but it was quite sizable. Like your specimen, it felt much lighter in the hand than one would expect given its size. Very impressive, and a pity they are not more popular (though maybe its better for us collectors that it stay that way)

It got better when our overlords got rid of of English trash, hooligans. They had a negative influence on the more afluend tourist trade. How the actual inhabitants suffer has no impact. So, what you get is that the upper middle class sells their canal houses, the main attraction in the old centre and move out. In come the Chinese and Russians, who buy up the best cultural assets for investment. There are many old beautiful city palaces that stand empty. Prices shoot through the roof and shopkeepers, the life blood of a functioning city cannot pay the exhorbitant rents. It is total destruction on many levels. We are fast going the way of Venice, a dead city where nobody actually can live anymore. A Dead Disney Land adventure park with canal boats, whores and drugs. The Hotel Maffia, the property developers and their political buddies have the town in a death grip. Lately we had protest marches, to try and curb the tourist trade. The mood is slowly changing and I sure hope it is not too late. We need to get rid of those greedy short sighted bastard#.

Next up will be the Swedish M1864. I am cleaning that one now, but it is very rusty, so it may take another week or two.

The joys of gentrification. Same thing happening here, but it's students instead of tourists. Developers and property owners starting to realize they can make more money from 6 or 8 students to a house Compared to 1 family. Local realignment of transit within the next few years may halt the transformation before it goes too far. Nothing against students, but dun want to see the feel of our community change on their account. I see enough of them at work anyway -.-

Yes, sorry about that. Was on your collection thread. Major revamp you're working on. Looks and reads very well. Thanks for the heads up Dave. Much appreciated.
Cheers.

I suspect the many other cities are undergoing a similar crisis. Commoner's always end up taking the pain for some rich man's short-term gain Here's a similar situation in Canada. Except here, the draw isn't tourism and pretty historic city centers- it's safety, free healthcare, education and lack of pollution. And really... if the second largest country is having issues with space... you've done messed up... I'm sure it's happening all over the world.

Fortunately in Canada, our main tourist draw is our wilderness. It's easy- we just dump them all in the middle of nowhere, tell them to enjoy some "nature". If they complain about being eaten by mosquitoes, we just say that it's "part of the outdoors experience".
The really annoying tourists, we feed to the bears.

I read about the housing bubble in Canada all the time. The bubble is going to burst, or is on the verge of doing so. The problem is that there is so much ,, black money '' going around that they just take their loss and move somewhere else, like locusts. And greedy local pols are waiting in line at the trough. Sometimes I wish we had bears too. We only have cows and frogs. Death by Frog... Does not sound very exiting.

Down here the tourists fall off cliffs all by themselves.

We bavarians have no real wilderness and nearly no bears so we take all the money from the tourists and send them home to earn more and come back again with it.

We promised to do this never again. No, fresh air, healthy strolls, good nutrition (all to pay for) for a long, happy and productive life of our tourists. They don't even annoy us because a bavarian is annoyed as a basic load, called the bavarian "grant" (= grump).

www.catawiki.com/en/l/62849325-austria-19th-century-early-to-mid-sabre Alright gentlemen, you know the drill. Again. A stupid impulse bid, one quick consultation on the internet to determine it wasn't austrian, and about 4 hours on Deutsches Blankwaffe, google images, and everywhere else has led me here. I am utterly confused on this sword. Ignoring the replaced grip (which gives me leeway to restore the rest of the sword now), this is the closest sword I have seen to mine. The curve of the knucklebow, while not exact, is the closest. Both sport a spearpoint fuller+diamond shaped foible. The scabbards look similar, albeit my sword looks overall smaller in every way but still sports a ~30mm width according to the seller. As an ultimate shot in the dark guess, could this be a variation (in the case that maybe official patterns were less rigidly enforced here vs say the Swiss) of the troopers version or perhaps even a lighter more nimbler officers version? The ringed pommel is quite interesting. I have no other leads at this point lol. Thanks for reading!
