I had a huge itch for the geometry offered with a Unokubi Zukuri blade.
I decided to try the Ryujin brand to compare with Munetoshi which I really like.
$348 delivered.
Here are the specs:
Overall Length: 40.25"
Blade Length: 28.5"
Sori: 0.75"
Handle/Tsuka Length: 11.5"
Handle Material: Wood, Samegawa, Synthetic Fiber Ito
Sword Weight w/o Saya: 2 lbs 6 oz
Blade Material: T-10 High Carbon Steel
Point of Balance: 4.5" from Tsuba
Blade: Sharp*
Rockwell Hardness: 58
Guard Material: Blackened Solid Steel
Fuchi/Kashira: Blackened Solid Steel
Saya: Wood with Genuine Buffalo Horn Koiguchi
Sageo: Black Thick Synthetic Fiber
The balance point is close, closer than I would normally prefer but since the blade is not a wide blade it ends up feeling similar to much wider blades. And it ends up weighing very much the same. It feels nimble. I will try it out for some light cutting this weekend if I can.
The blade is relatively clean although at the very tip it is thicker on the left than the right.
The issues are minor and cosmetic but they do exist. The ray wrap on the exterior of the saya shows where it was painted and affixed.
The diamonds of the ito are wayyy off. On one side they seem to alternate high then low all the way along. (Funny but they are off even in the advertisement copy) But the wrap is tight and fits the hand. Tiny bits of wood showing at the points of the diamonds. One of the shitodome was loose.
The painting of the saya is either incomplete of they thought the wood showing in certain spots was a feature? It does resemble a tiger's eye effect.
Hamon is light.
I really want to see how this cuts and how it stands up to the task.
Grade:
Tsuka: D-
Blade: B+
