My son in law's niece comes over to visit occasionally. She's in college, a really smart kid and going places. Anyway, she recently told me she joined The Society For Creative Anachronism and was really interested in learning the sword. Since then I've gotten a progress update, her teacher says she's doing well except she's not good at combining a defense with an attack but heck, she's barely starting. It seems to me I've heard SCA swordplay isn't very accurate but also that they've been trying to improve it. I have no idea what prompted this sudden interest in swordplay (probably a boyfriend who's into it) but she's having a blast and says she loves it.

i was a member for almost 30 years and i"d say that heavy sca combat isn't at all authentic using rattan swords and often extremely silly armor types including kydex disguised as real armor. sometimes not that well disguised.
that said, the light community, or fencing is a pretty good community with many folks who are interested in historic fencing. the only real problem is that the grop is rife with adult children, "politicians" and old boy clubs. avoid those idiots and you will have plenty of fun.

at one time or another I've met most of the founders, and some of them were even decent people.

My friend in Israel had a sister (recently passed away) who was some sort of big deal in the SCA, I'm not sure what exactly she did but I do know her degree was in history.

I really liked his novels when I was younger, should read them again some time. Weird looking: You should see me with hat and Atlantean, ...and your avatar isn't bad either. Btw, I looked it up, our kingdom here is Drachenwald (dragonwoods).

So gandermail can tell his ... niece, she should wear a strange hat when going to a SCA event. She should specialize in rapier then!

Everyone going to an SCA event should wear a strange hat! Heavy fighting is its own thing and isn't really trying to be historically accurate although there are some who are trying to use historical techniques. Rapier tends to be more accurate but this depends on the group, same goes for cut and thrust (metal swords and percussive cuts). Best way to see the SCA is as an umbrella organisation where people do various historical activities with varying degrees of accuracy.

This is true. You really need to avoid the old boy clubs. Worse than high school girls.

Is a snap brim fedora a strange enough hat? In it's (and my) defense it's a nice hat, not like those cheap things the neckbeards wear. But I have an extremely difficult time finding hats large enough for me so I'd hate to have to get another "stranger" one.
