This is just a quick blurb about the United Cutlery M48 Hawk.
I'm not adding pics because they can be found almost anywhere on the net.
Just picked one up and wanted to give my opinion based on reviews I've read before I decided to purchase one.
First of all, lots of reviews focus on throwing this hawk. I have no intentions on doing so. I've owned other hawks before ( and since gotten rid of them all ) and believe the handle will break on the first botched throw. Many reviewers on youtube complain that their handles broke when thrown. What people don't consider is... how bad was the throw?? Not to mention that with a composite handle, there is very little forgiveness when thrown badly. A wooden handle, with properly aligned grain, will be much more forgiving to the amateur "chucker" like myself.
Secondly, many reviewers attempt "bushcraft" with this hawk. I WOULD NOT TAKE THIS INTO THE WOODS. I spend a lot of time in the woods and would NEVER consider taking this hawk hunting, fishing, camping, or even hiking. Can it chop down a tree? Yes. Can it split wood? Yes. Can it make fuzz sticks? Yes. Are there much more efficient and safer ways to do all this? YES!! I've done all these tasks with this hawk and it performed alright. Hope you don't mind a menacing spike in your face while doing so!
My point being....
Don't listen to the plethora of idiots on youtube when making your decision to buy this hawk. It is what it is... An intimidating, cool looking, gnarly, nasty, post apocalyptic instrument of death!... and I love it. In it's original configuration, It's meant for soft targets. You know what I mean. I'm going to keep it next to my night table...
