Today, I received the holiday edition of the Museum Replicas catalog. Among the new items, I noticed that Windlass will be producing a version of the Seax of Beagnoth, which they call the Runic Long Seax. It doesn't appear to be on the Museum Replicas website yet. The blade is 23 inches long and it weighs 2 lbs 2 oz. Overall length is 29 1/4 inches. Edit: Here is the photo from the catalog

It certainly looks better than the maldon from the battlecry line.

It's basically a very old model they've brought back (with a crisscross grip wrap). A good one though.

I like windlass, I really do but could they get rid of that ugly windlass, made in india logo and get a proper makers mark, jesus its not that hard. it sorta ruins the aesthetics of the swords

Well, I'm intrigued. May hold out for reviews/impressions, but it's tempting me... Only thing holding me back is that it's Windlass.

One key thing to realize about choosing well with Windlass is a pair of "rules of thumb." They aren't absolute, but speak well of taking a gamble on this one. If it's a single-edged piece you're much more likely to get a good one. If it's a shorter piece you're much more likely to get a good one. My Horsehead Falcata and my Qaddara-type "Kindjal"--and the original Mongol Sword it took me a couple decades to finally find used--are easily the match of anything I have from Albion, Arms & Armor or Atrim. (Of course none of these models ever lasted very long and all are long discontinued. The other rule of thumb with Windlass. For some totally mystifying reason, if they DO have something awesome... it will soon disappear. )

MRL/ Windlass used what looks to be the same blade on what they called the "runic seax" in the mid to late 90's. I remember it being well reviwed, but short run. The hilt furniture was different, but the blade is very close if not identical. I regretted missing it in the day. If it's still around when I finish my second tour of grad school, I'll snag one.

Only Windlass product I've ever handled (and the one I currently still possess) is their old "Viking Dirk," a double-edge dagger thingy with Viking-inspired pommel and guard. I've never used it for anything, but I did butcher an edge onto it via accusharp-type device that I've never gotten around to blending.
To its credit, I was messing about with it for the first time in ages just the other night and it still held the same edge. I've had knives go dull sitting, so there's that.
I'm thinking, if nothing else, this might be a better partner to my Kris Cutlery "shirasaya" seax, than the Deepeeka model of the same inspiration.
Still pending better stats, oh, and money...

I like seax blades and in particular the "broken back" seax that is characteristic of the Anglo-Saxons. There aren't many reproductions of a seax in this manner so its rare to see one that is made in the langseax fashion As of right now, this is the only langseax available to the common customer unless they seek out a custom order from a personal smith. There are many other seax knives up on KoA but they all are much shorter, purely stage combat weapons or aren't made in the broken back fashion. I really wish there was a much wider selection for the seax because as of right now there's really only two on the KoA site that do it just right: Windlass' Runic Seax (the longest version on the site) www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=501531&name=Runic+Long+SeaxLord of Battles (the most accurate "no frills" version) kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SNDA5311The Lord of Battles fighting seax shown above is a no frills seax that is more affordable than most, has that characteristic broken back shape and a historically accurate sheath that comes with it. Windlass' Runic Seax got the blade right but the handle is very Viking indeed. Not a bad thing, especially if you intend to cut with it but the Runic Seax looks so nice with the runes imprinted along the spine that I would feel bad using it. Still, it is the best option out there for a Langseax at the moment.
