It's interesting to compare Viking's battles and fights with GOT's. GOT clearly has a much larger budget and fancier cameras. The Battle of Bastards was stunningly beautiful. But Vikings has a lot more battles and the editors are willing to share a lot of love among even minor characters. That really helps give the viewer a sense of a battle. In the Bastards the focus is always on the "stars." The rest of the cast is just background. Which is doubly frustrating because if you freezer frame you can see some of the extras doing some awesome work. I've actually crossed swords with some of the wildlings and they're solid fighters in real life. Vikings gives us that love, and even if the polish isn't as fine the end result is more engaging and real. The fighting is better too. Some of the one-on-one fights in GOT have been horrendously bad.
Here's one from Season 3 of Vikings. It's solid theatrical fighting. I'd say their shields are too passive but other than that they are doing really well. The fights have clear direction with no spinning nonsense, no wire work and no CGI bolstering.
And this is GOT's best to date. The camera is fixed firmly on JS while everything else is a blur apart from little cinematic moments. There's no sense of direction to most of the engagements. People are just flying in and out of frame around Snow. It's a gorgeous bit of filmmaking, but as a fight it's not too great.

Usually shieldwork is horrible in movies, esp. in vikings. Using a shield seems not to be cool, perhaps because you can't draw your two swords on your back then. It's hard for me to watch those victim-actors trying to get their shields out of the way fast enough when the hero strikes with his sword.

The few GoT duel type fights I've watched were pretty terrible. The Tower of Joy fight was pretty awesome though. Cosmoline, you got to fight some of the wildlings? Tell me more.... The Vikings fights are pretty good, but they start to get repetative after a while. Lots of twirly movements too....

Not a battle, but an epic scene from Lone Wolf McQuade as he escapes from being buried:

The Mounds was epic. Really set the standard for the time.
Some of the HEMA guys from Ireland I met in Berlin last year worked as extras to play wildlings. And they really do look the part! They were much better at sword fighting than the leads.

That's awesome. I think extras are often very overlooked in terms of talent. Especially playing the evil mindless minion: you have to seem weak and yet threatening at the same time, and then die and yet not encourage feelings of sympathy from the audience.
