paint2 is posting the reproductions again. Some additional since the last listing of swords. www.ebay.com/sch/paint2/m.html?item=183713275359When the time is right, I may try one of the Potter sabers. That and the Rose nco only because they are kind of unobtainable. An original Potter sells high and I haven't seen any of the Rose nco variants listing/selling for a couple of decades outside of books and articles. We occasionally see these swords on forum boards from happy owners. The swords from paint2 are coming from some of the sources shared with gggodwin and The Royal Sword.

If you do try one of the Potters, do share your thoughts I've been watching that seller for a while off and on.

BTW, there is nothing really fraudulent about the listing because it is a best offer listing, is an old sword posted in the appropriate section and the description does contain an all encompassing disclaimer in welcoming information. It is just a chuckle and move on situation. That is unless one wants to buy a really rusty and beat up 1796 lc and put in a subjectively reasonable offer. You guys should hang out in the WWII knife section listings This isn't someone naively selling a sword they think might have historical significance. This is the effort of someone actively acting deceptively and in bad faith. It is a textbook example of fraud. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/fraud

This is the effort of someone actively acting deceptively and in bad faith. It is a textbook example of fraud. en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/fraud Yet, it is not fraud. As misleading as it might seem, he does include a disclaimer and does tender offers. There are oodles of such listings. If you read the ad copy carefully, he is only supposing so and not offering an absolute at all. I could list any object within a given timeline a "might have" or "could have" story along with a six figure buy it now and a make an offer option. The sword predates Custer, so "could have been found at the site of slaughter" is not fraud. Linking swords to Native Americans, so what? From comic books to perfume bottles. I have had one listing removed (and then relisted appropriately by a buyer) by notifying eBay, then contacting the seller with retail proof of the item he was "fraudulently" listing and including to him that I had reported his listing and the retail pictures/links. In that instance easy enough, as it was a Hanwei sidesword listed as an American Revolution officer's sword. I have mixed results in trying to elucidate a misguided seller but the kegger this guy put together is worth a chuckle and no more than that. Honestly not worth the time to further debate his actions. You and any others are welcome to and then get slapped on the wrist for disrupting an active listing. This one stands above many as hilarious and a sucker is born every minute. As mentioned, the listing has been on eBay for a good many years. Most boards seriously dissuade discussing active auctions and we are privileged enough here to be able to at least link them. myArmoury has an eBay thread but not for critique of the listings, simply posting finds. Whatever floats your boat There are eBay groups one can participate in.

In many cases, bid on the item, not the story. Some are willing to pay more for a properly noted provenance for an item of note. This one is not a case of proper provenance, so it is just a rusty ole p1796. One could spin a similar story for the Confederacy, or even the War of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans. Or Sand Creek. Or....or At any rate and for any auction setting, determine what your limits are and don't get carried away. eBay has partnered with Gixen in a way that Gixen will show on listings allowing one to use their service. Or, simply use the eBay automatic bidding (again, set your limits). Both systems can beat other sniping, with Gixen actually giving one an edge but some programs will automatically bump up to the next increment with a couple of seconds to go. One's system speed may be faster than another's. Sniping is not just acceptable but suggested by eBay themselves set a limit and don't fret it or sit, fret and snipe in the last moments. Or, stick to offers and Buy it now.

If you do try one of the Potters, do share your thoughts I've been watching that seller for a while off and on. A period Potter would be one of my wants but well into the four figure bracket. The reproductions have been selling but we never see any reports back. The Starr reproductions as well. D Kelly (iirc) had one of The Royal Sword cutlasses and not really bowled over. Some have regarded gggodwin stuff as crap. I did buy a spear from him and it is a lump of iron but mean looking Hey $40 for the black beast and a shipped free $30 bo staff haft. gggodwin and David at The Royal Sword seem like decent guys and the eBay seller likely of the same good ole boy rendezvous crowd. The Potter sword has a history to it. I hesitate to buy any more repros at all because I am at the end phases and physicality, so another decoration I don't really need. For me, it would be a teaching prop at the annual public thing I missed last year. drive.google.com/file/d/0B9AOFMA8y3ODbjNyclplU0pIM00/view?that may link but I may have another for it. The Rose and US Marines nco eagle look ok to me, for what they are and are more or less historically correct.

Wow, I've never seen that Custer sword before. I live about 30 miles from the battlefield. It's fascinating to see how Custer's legacy has changed over they years. We have parks, schools, streets, and towns named after him long ago, but modern times paint him as a villain or incompetent (See Night at the Museum). The battlefield itself is well-worth a visit. I should ask a historian there about the sword.
When I was a kid, it was Custer Battlefield and now it is Little Bighorn Battlefield. It was Custer-centric back then but now presents a great nuanced view of the both sides of the battle. One thing that stuck out to me was how green the majority of Custer's troops were--most were Irish immigrants who had not grown up on the back of a horse like the Sioux, etc. I wonder if Custer's Civil War success was due more to the quality of combat veterans under his command than to his leadership.

My reading of Custer is that he did not do proper intelligence work and attacked a village that was several times the size he thought it was, plus his supply base was too far away because the Army had declined to fund a base closer to where the action was going to be. Sadly, that is the way wars are often fought. Netnet, he boobooed and lost, but not necessarily a reason to trash his whole career. The Indians gained no long term benefit from this high-profile victory.

I'm still amazed at the blatant false advertising on Ebay, Amazon, Etsy, etc. I was looking at helmets the other day and saw one I liked. It was a photo of a helm made by ArmStreet...of this, I'm 100% sure. But... the description said it was made by another maker(whom I've NEVER heard of) and the reviews from customers(2 star or less)--((with photos)) showed a completely different helm that looks like it was made by a drunken, one-eyed monkey. The photo even had the ArmStreet logo in the lower right corner, just with the name blanked out. WTF?
How...just tell me HOW...this is possible? Don't get me wrong...Ebay, Amazon, etc. are all good places to shop. Going there, you should have a little bit of savvy about you and the product you are looking at, obviously. You don't go buy eggs at the market and not look in the carton first, do you? And the market doesn't tell you the eggs were laid by a solid gold chicken, do they? It just befuddles me how they can flat-out LIE and get away with it.
Sorry....that's my rant. I'm done now.

I seem to recall reading something that they all told their families they wouldn't be coming back. Found a source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_BouyerThe visitor center has quite a bit on Mr. Bouyer. His skull was found the farthest from the main group of dead soldiers. I'm no forensic archaeologist, but it seemed to me where his remains were found along with some others it's possible they were attempting to break out when they died.

There are some real deals budding on eBay and a lot of them good looking antique deals. Here is one seller with both old and new. He has caught my attention in the past but his posting of a reproduction spadroon prompts me to list him. www.ebay.com/sch/nipigon-nylon/m.html?www.ebay.com/itm/BRITISH-ENGLISH-NAPOLIONIC-1812-PERIOD-INFANTRY-OFFICER-SWORD-ENGRAVINGS-repro/202624987839?The spadroon peaked my notice because there has been one listed in the Reinhardt Collection sale forever. www.hankreinhardt.com/Sale/Swords/Swords%20221.htmAlso of my own interests are surprisingly a nice sword listed from majortomm and a dandy looking p1796 light cavalry sword slightly mislisted by someone else.. None of these linked here but smallsword also as a nice older militia Ames cruciform. The type I gone on about at times. Maybe it is tax time that floats stuff to the surface. I'm not even halfway through my regular eBay searches of the day but I'm posting up that spadroon before I forget to, or break down and buy it.

Oof, it's hard to trust the research on a website that lists a French phrase as Latin.

Oof, it's hard to trust the research on a website that lists a French phrase as Latin. A common enough mistake and with little bearing regarding what the Reinhardt collection represents, nor the website. England's language use in royal and legal courts used both French and Latin until the 18th century.

That Horstmann Saxon pallasch thingie is lingering and now listed with an almost reasonable starting price. It needs some tlc but the grip wire is better than mine. www.ebay.com/itm/173866165667?ViewItem=&item=173866165667I hate to think I would need two of them These turn up etched, unetched, gilt hilts, Horstmann and not, Very few with scabbards. The same hilt sans langets and sabre blades are the Bavarian 1826. The one listed is the only other one I have seen like mine with the old Horstmann mark Aside from it being a fullered backsword, the overall feel is much like my 17th century felddegen/walloon. These are not a super stiff blade but meant as a compromise.

Does it feel pretty nimble in the hand compareed to say a 1796 HCS?

His measurements might not add up but my walloon is just a smidge longer in the blade .75 for the Walloon. The one period 1796 hc I have handled seemed a good bit shorter but a bit of illusion. Not as near point heavy as one might think. A much different feel than a French dragoon. The hilt on mine above adds up to a ltlle more than 4", so something is getting lost in the translation. I have forgotten the specifics of my specifications off the top of my head and the sword twenty minutes away right now. Dale Martin had mentioned a similar sword (in brass lol) as likely Saxon heavy cavalry www.swordforum.com/vb4/showthread.php?118933-Pre-Civil-War-SwordBack when I purchased it www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?108711-Bavarian-1826-Hilt-Broad-and-Straight-Horstmann-MarkedMine came from Stephan, a quality dealer on the west coast. He lists on ebay every now and then. www.antiquefirearms.com/index.htmlI really need to go through my dealer links, as so many pages have moved or been removed
