Been thinking about what i want to make for my summer/end of forge season build this year, and came up with an old school blade, since i hand forged all the parts for a sword last year thought i might go one further this year and see if i can do it all without any power tools, then thought i should challenge my fellow fabricators to do it as well just for fun, no time frame, no judging (beyond usual forum), no set styles. Plan is to forge the blade with hammer and fire not even going to cut stock with grinder going to hot cut, then finish with files and sand paper, fabricate handle, guard and pommel with hand tools (including hand drill), then enjoy/destroy final product, im looking forward to seeing if i can and what i end up with at the end, should be fun, so anyone else up for some old school forging?

Hammering a thin straight bevel is still a challenge for me. Especially since I like bevels about 10° (per side). I'll follow but I don't think I want in since I know I'm no blacksmith yet. For me it would end with too much manual work to correct my poor skill level.

I think it's a neat challenge but I have to agree with Driggers, I don't really want to. My time in the shop is better spent on other things. I am looking forward to what you will show though ;)

Depends on what you mean by "blade" anyway. I mean, I could do a small/medium knife no problem. Just not anything bigger or fancy. Would also have to use my drill press to drill the holes in the tang, as I don't have a hand drill.

So this is supposed to be, like, 100% hand tools, right?

thats the plan no power just muscle they way it was done back in the day, closest thing to a power tool i plan on using is a manually operated hand drill

spent about another hour in it today got the handle pieces drilled out (went with alternating sections of red and white oak) and shaped the foam pieces i am gonna attempt to cast, so far ive been impressed how tight a fit you can achieve with just hand tools. goes to show you dont need a ton of fancy equipment to have a go just a will to try and a ton of patience, which i have to say has been super tempting to go with the power tools just to speed things up(especially cutting out handle woods and things) but also having a great time just doing what im doing and impressed with how easy its been so far, im under no illusions this is gonna be a stunner when done but it will be a cool piece if only for the back story

I started on mine, tonight. Had a 1/4"X1/4"X12" piece of 1095, so I decided to cut it in half, weld it together, and fold it until it's a usable shape.

I got the billet all forged out and a little bit of work done to it, but have been mostly working on other things. I'll mess with it some more this weekend. I'm gonna try to get this little dude done this weekend.

nice job mike, especially by hand makes mine look rougher than ever lol, more updates cast the hilt parts out of aluminum using lost foam casting parts separated from casting next to heat treated blade made two pommels as couldnt decide on final design, went with larger one as it balanced the knife better with all the parts test fitted together and handle sanded/filed back one of the blocks cracked at the end so i had to glue it together so far looking ok i think, total hours to date about 5
