Hello, Just a quick question that crossed my mind regarding a certain design I see (mostly in fantasy based european swords). Certain fantasy longswords, have a sort of "habaki" or metal sleeve that's either part (or paired) with the guard of the sword, that travels up where a fuller would be. So my question is this; Is there an actual name given to these weird (seemingly) decorative pieces? I can't think of many examples off the top of my head, but one such example comes to mind is Dark Souls "Sliver Knight Straight Sword", pictured here:

Seems like a fantasized version of long langets to me.

Langets. This type of langet isn't common in European swords (the Scottish Highland two-handed claymore often has them), but they're more common on Indian swords.
They (a) secure the guard to the blade, (b) stiffen the base of the blade, and sometimes (c) secure the blade to the hilt.
Langets with a space between them and the blade are more common on both European and Indian swords. These are like an external habaki. The habaki lets the blade sit securely in the scabbard, without the blade itself being tight in the scabbard. Langets (with space) sit on the outside of the scabbard, and similarly stop the blade from moving in the scabbard, without the blade being tight in the scabbard.

Oh dang. Thanks for all the posts and links. :0 I've heard of langets before, but I only thought they only refereed to things such as polearms, axes, and anything with a shaft. The more you know, I suppose. Thanks again for all the replies, and additional links!

I've noticed with most Japanese anime and videogames European themed fantasy swords have a habaki above the guard. A few notable series I've seen that do this are Dragon Ball Z with Gohan's Sword, Trunks Sword and the Kai's Z sword, swords from the Legend of Crystania (swords from that series look like the Longship Paul linked), Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest (games designed by Akira Toriyama the creator of DBZ).
As far as production models go the CAS/Hanwei line of European swords have short riccasso that could technically count as "habaki". As they don't really have any purpose aside from securing the blade better in the scabbard and are featured on the whole line. Even on swords that wouldn't have a riccasso like the River Witham Sword.
