This one.... www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH2008&name=Tiberius+GladiusI’ve been looking for a Maintz type gladius for some time, but having difficulty finding something that was A) Affordable, B) In-stock, C) Reasonably historically accurate. This looks like a new model from Deepeeka - and it checked all those boxes for me, so i took the plunge. It is about $100 more than most Deepeekas. I’m guessing the ornate scabbard has a lot to do with that. It’s also a bit longer than most Gladius on the market - which i like. And it has an inset brass plate on the guard - which you don’t see often on anything cheaper than Albions. I did order it unsharpened - just in case i want to return it due to QC issues. If it’s all good, i’ll try to sharpen it myself. My first Gladius. And my first Deepeeka. Wish me luck. I’ll give an update when it arrives.

I was just looking at that gladius the other day. Looks like Deepeeka has stepped up their game with this one.

It should arrive this coming wednesday. Props to KOA for shipping it on the same afternoon i ordered it - and before the holiday weekend. I hope the higher price is backed up by the build quality.

I might be just ignorant but doesn't the fact they don't offer the sharpening service mean it's not meant as a usable sword? I thought that was the case with KOA. That said, it's freakin' beautiful.

I might be just ignorant but doesn't the fact they don't offer the sharpening service mean it's not meant as a usable sword? I thought that was the case with KOA. That said, it's freakin' beautiful. I asked KOA about this a couple weeks ago. They responded - saying that KOA will in fact sharpen Deepeeka blades - but it's more expensive - typically $35 - $40. This is because the blades are thicker than average - so it's more time-consuming for KOA. Sharpening estimates are given on a case-by-case basis. When asked about sharpening this blade, they said it would be $30. But once sharpened, i’d be unable to return it. So i opted not to... just in case.

That's beautiful. Are you going to do any durability tests when you get it?

Deepeeka's Tiberius Gladius arrived yesterday from KOA. Well-packed, unsharpened - and in a super-fast two business days. Here are some initial Impressions with photos. I will try to do a full review in the next few days. Initial Impressions... • Fit & finish of blade could be better. It has an asymmetrical profile - ie: one of the 'shoulders' of the point is about .75 inch out of alignment with the other. At first this really bothered me. Now not so much. If i do decide to keep it, i may try correct this, when i put an edge on it. • Blade could be a bit more narrow in the waist. Again something that could be done without too much trouble i think, • Guard, Grip, & Pommel are solid and properly aligned. • Grip feels a bit skinny, and one can only imagine the even skinnier tang inside. Doesn't seem robust enough for heavy cutting. But would probably be fine for thrusting at light targets. • Though i have yet to unwrap it, the scabbard appears to be very well-executed - fit for a high ranking officer. In fact, the scabbard looks too nice for the gladius itself - which seems more humbly suited to a lower ranking officer or common soldier. • The blade has a nice clear ring when tapped with something solid. Summary: There are some things i like about it, and other things i'm not crazy about. It's hard to fully recommend at its current price ($280 shipped), but at this point, I'm about 90% sure i'm gonna keep it. It fills a niche in my collection for the present.

Looks like you and I were on the same quest, first Gladius. I thought of going Deepeeka because of the historical accuracy and gave the Tiberius a hard look. Thanks for the first impression and photos.
