Daniel, I have a copy of the first American edition sans dust jacket, and it does have Reischauer's forward. It's definitely a good read like you say and worth picking up a copy. It's often in paperback and sometimes in 5 volumes which can be pretty pricey if found on Evil Bay. That being said, it's still a great addition to one's library.

The review was well done and accurate.
I've read the novels, watched the movies, read books about his life, and read the manga. I don't know if you enjoy manga at all but there is one called vagabond by takehiko inoue that is an adaptation of musashi's story. It has beautiful art and the character development is more subtle. I prefer the manga to the novel for that. You might give it a chance if you are a fan of musashi.

I asked for the hardcover of this book for my birthday in my mid-teens. Cost almost $40. Loved it. I am now re-reading it.

So slow to release though. Yeah, unfortunately it hasn't released a chapter in a while. It used to be monthly. But hey,m if he can come back from a break like his last one, he might come back with this one. He is so close to the end after all. Of course, that could also be wishful thinking.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm glad you liked the review. I'm thinking about doing a watch-through of the Samurai Trilogy, who's with me?

Nice review, Dan.
As for the Samurai trilogy, the Criterion edition Blu ray set is well worth the price; the Criterion on-line shop and Barnes and Noble rtegulary have half price sales. Sign up for the Criterion newsletter and you'll get notification of such.

Gotta check out this trilogy thingy. Not familiar with it. If it's expensive, my wife may say I'm allergic to it.......

Adrian, Whadda my gonna do with you? Here I was totally admiring you for being a sarcastic curmudgeon, (CM First Class, no less!) and then you go and offer to be Mister Nice-guy to me.
Thanks for the link. I will check this out tomorrow PM when I'm back home from the VA.

Hey, I'm a nice guy. I'm Mr. Nice Guy...and if anybody disagrees, give me their names and I'll immediately eject them from this forum!
The Trilogy is definitely worth a shot. Toshiro Mifune starring as Miyamoto Musashi? The goods. A little bit much to see him as 16 year old Musashi, but would you complain about 1971 Clint Eastwood playing a 16 year old Harry Callahan if they had done an early life scene in Dirty Harry? Of course not.

Good review. Having read the review a couple of times now, I would say that it could be interpreted as insinuating that "Musashi" is an historical account of Musashi's life. That, it most certainly is not. The author does nothing to quell such conclusions either, by the way. That caveat notwithstanding, it is an amazing book and a good review.
