Honshu Wolf Katana The Honshū wolf or Japanese wolf is one of the two extinct subspecies of the gray wolf once endemic to the islands of Japan. The Honshū wolf occupied the islands of Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū in Japan. The wolf was afforded a benign place in Japanese folklore and religious traditions: the clan leader Fujiwara no Hidehira was said to have been raised by wolves, and the wolf is often symbolically linked with mountain kami in Shinto. The blade or Kami is handforged of T10 high carbon steel and differentially tempered using traditional claying methods. As a result of yakiire the gunome midare based on notare hamon or temperline is evident and clearly visible. The Suguta is Shinogi Zukuri with Torii Zori (curve) with a geometric O-kissaki. A Bo-hi on the Shinogiji to reduce weigth and improve cutting power and gives an excellent balance with a loud tachi-kaze. The The Iori (roof) Mune which came very populair after koto period in Japan. The blade shows a nice ko maru boshi. The Tsuka features genuine black Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a tightly-woven grey cotton wrap (Tsuka-Ito). The tang is double-pegged with mekugi ana for security. All the blackened steel fittings are decorated in Honshu Wolf motif and shows some delicate details. The black grey silk ito and black gey striped lacquered saya are beautifull finished. Specifications: Nagasa: 71 cm Tsuka: 29 cm Overall: 103 cm Motohaba (bottom width): 3,20 cm Motokasane (bottom blade thickness): 7 mm Sakihaba (yokote width): 2,1 cm Sakikasane (yokote thickness): 5 mm Sori: 1,93 cm Weight: 1170 gram Its matter of taste if you like this theme but the mounting quality is awesome and is really a testament to their quality of Hanwei. I am curious how people think about this katana.

I love the koshirea style on that sword, and that hamon is breathtaking! If this was offered in a no-hi style with healthy niku I would start saving every penny immediately to purchase one. If it isn't offered in no-hi I would buy the entire set of fittings for my own sword, I've been searching for wolf theme fittings for a long time and I love these.

In general, it looks like a good effort. I like a lot of the color scheme. If you were willing to have the brass parts silver plated, I think it would be a tremendous compliment to the other pieces - getting at the shitodome might be tough. Another option might be blackening them. I like the menuki a lot, and the blade facing side of the tsuba is nice.
Hope you enjoy it

I had never heard of this Hanwei model up until now. I like the wolf theme a lot, and it comes out best I think in the menuki. Stripped saya is a nice touch, too. As Learningswordsman1 said, the bo-hi is almost a deal-breaker for me. Overall, that is a really nice sword, though. I hope you like it, and thanks for the review!

Love anything that deals with Wolves but this must be a custom katana because I did an online search and could not find it anywhere. Found some other Wolf theme katanas made by other makers but not this one.

This katana is brand new, I did some snapshots but will take some more later. The O-kissaki is really nice (some say its the face of the blade). Besides the aesthetics its well balanced, honestly thats my first point to appreciate a katana. Its not a custom but will be sold widespread soon. I will place a link soon but honestly some folks will see this as vendor talk which is not my intention (sorry for that).

Dang it, after I promised myself NO MORE KATANAS I have enough, this has to come out. I'm going to have to find a different hobby or a bigger house.

That is a great looking katana. However, I have a feeling it's going to be out of my price range.

Nice katana, love the grey and thanks for reviewing it. The only nitpick I could give it is the ugly werewolf on the bottom side of the tsuba. Seems a little tacky to me. Love the grey color scheme though and I wish we'd see more on the market with it.

So in US Dollars that would be $959.37 plus shipping and any taxes.

Darn, it only comes with a hi. $900+ for a sword with a fuller is a deal breaker for me. I love those fittings though, I'm going to be looking for those, mainly the tsuba, fuchi, and kashira.

Sell these mountings with a no-hi hlade and I jump on it.

Hanwei is closed right now due to holidays but if I can find 4-5 people who have interest in same katana without Hi I think I can provide.

I would be highly interested, though it would take me a while to save the money for it.

For me it's just a looks thing but if I like the rest of it it's not a deal breaker. I only have four Katanas three of which have Hi but I do like the looks of the no Hi better because it doesn't look as modern. More of an ancient look without the Hi.
