The irony here is that we've gotten into this subject on a sword forum. What is interesting, however, is that in actuality, we only need to prepare for things that happen with some frequency, if not regularity, and always have. We have storms and the power goes out; we have snowstorms and no one can go anywhere; and the Mississippi River floods. We've all been through it already. One can watch a newsreel from 1935 and the news is virtually the same. The names are different but just about everything else is the same. The Mississippi was flooding then, too. In fact, about the only difference is that there are no longer any news stories about new hats.

Oh, yeah, talk about terrible events that are not talked about (no modern media covering minutia), as some communities simply want to forget bad things...human nature and all. There was a town that was destroyed (and many drowned) by a wave of Molasses...and another Beer (a better way to go...burp) as the storage bins were poorly designed. I think your point gains even more validity depending on the region you live (Hurricane Alley off the Gulf, for one). My late father put food in the cellar (a cement lined room under the garage) during the Cuban missile crisis period...like "duck and cover" would have helped. A months worth of rations is so much better than, what, 72 hours recommended by many emergency services. I need to get more prepared, myself...too much time on the internet giving advise to others...human nature and all.

Oh, I think bad things are talked about plenty, if not necessarily in a realistic way. Some communities do want to forget things but they don't and they can't. After all, we're still talking about the Civil War, which ended about a hundred years before most of us were born (81 years in my case). Our collective memory never forgets anything--unless we want to. Then we just pretend something never happened. People are funny like that. But nobody's going to forget, for example, that flood that devastated the downtown in a way nobody could ever remember happening before. But some things make better stories than others.

That molasses flood, though... I found out about that one by chance while researching something else, and that was a BAD day for a lot of people. I'm surprised it's not well known.

The Civil War (nearly, if not THE most significant event in American history) had BETTER be remembered. The "Molasses Flood"...mainly a big deal for that particular town only, and kind of embarrassing...the cleanup must have been/was quite interesting. If math serves, that puts you at around 70. I wonder what the future "sidearm" will be, as we went from sword to handgun in roughly the time of the Civil war (which was why Bowie knives were popular, as they were reliable, unlike the first revolvers that appeared)?

I was 70 last Sunday. Your math is still good.

Here’s a man when faced with a choice chose his sword over his pistol. I think the clerk was lucky that he did not put the sword to any hard use as I suspect that it would have probably fallen apart under stress. Oh well, bottom line is that it worked.

I think in this case, machete beats (THAT) sword. That sword kind of says "Sinbad on Meth", btw. Right out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.

Yes, is cartoonish sword but the robber was using his sword to intimidate not to use it. In front of another sword he decided to run. I guess he was told by his parent "if his is bigger, run!"

The fellow might have been better off with a bat; no chance of cutting yourself! Perhaps for that reason Cold Steel makes bats. In fact, they make five different bats and for good measure, a cricket bat, too, for when you're feeling hooliganish or something. Yes, I know, but they don't use bats in soccer or rugby.

If you watch Walking Dead, you will know Lucille, the main bad guy's barb wire wrapped slugger. I must say, however, that I would be FAR more afraid (psychologically) of a lunatic coming at me with a large blade due to the potential of having a limb cut off with relative ease. Even a minor blow on your hand could take all your fingers. A simple stab going in a few inches and its life or death surgery in the ER. You need a pretty good whack with the bat, and bones heal, but its the small stuff with the blades, like a PERMANENT slash diagonally across the face, that people realize in their minds. Bats are certainly underrated, though, and I would RUN SCREAMING from one if a loon were coming at me with one.

Sorry but I have no idea what Walking Dead is about. Is it a movie or a TV show? But you are correct about blades. It can be an inch that kills, not that I've ever known anyone who was so much as stabbed with anything or for that matter, hit with a bat or rock. I did know someone who was killed with a razor (not stabbed, of course) and another person murdered in her sleep with a gun.

I use a more different way. While shooting, any person worthy enough to be in a fire fight with someone, and not running away, will be counting down the bullets, it is programmed into them.
So, I am counting down the bullets, the magazine is gone half down and I need to go melee (for some reason), I will keep using my dominant (right for me) hand to shoot, bring left hand, unsheath and bring the handle to the right hand and switch, then unsheathed completely. Also, training for single hand reloading exists.

Walking Dead is a TV show, Sunday nights on AMC in America that deals with a group living in a zombie infested post apocalypse. Everyone who has ever cut themselves in a minor way has ingrained into their minds the permanent potential nature of even the most benign looking cuts. I think it is in the being maimed that is of great concern.

Well, I don't watch television. I'm out of touch with reality.

Well, I don't watch television. I'm out of touch with reality. Yes, you must join the REAL world, and tune into a zombie infested post apocalypse show on the boob tube. Real life is overrated...at least when zombies are involved, and as the TV shows keep telling me, you never know when they can/WILL strike...(knock on the door)...what was that?

At least your news channels don't tell you that there are Cannibals on the loose who are kidnapping and eating people. You would think they saw too much of 'Wrong Turn'.
