I have the Cold Steel Grosse Messer thanks to an Amazon gift certificate and was wondering...
I am thinking I would remove the black coloring on the pommel and guard ... Is it just paint and does anyone have any suggestions for removal?
Thanks!

I do not know about the Messer, but I removed the finish on the CS Scottish Basket sword with vinegar. Chances are they are the same, just a gun blue finish. Unscrew the sword if possible and dunk the parts in vinegar 50%. After 10 minutes they will be clean. Remove air bubbles with a small brush. Wash parts in hot water and dunk them in ammonia - water solution, 1 - 10, to truly stop the acid from rusting the parts. Take the hair dryer to dry them and finish with oil or Ren Wax. Take care to do the insides very carefully. No sanding is needed, so all nice lines will stay sharp and crisp.
Cheers.
Edit: Yes it's gun blue, so no problems.

Uhlan,
Thanks cor the info!
I would love to see a pic of the de-blued basket hilt if you can!
I have one of those as well and was considering removing the black there as well...

Here you go. If you look closely you can make out the original and nice polish that was under the blue. It is a kind of satin finish. I also filed off the genormous Cold Steel brand stamp on the belt hook. And removed the black lacquer from the real shark skin covered grip with acetone and a stiff small brush and aged it a bit with brown stain mixed with some satin colourless lacquer, so it wont come off on my hand. And made a new liner out of felt and cooked leather of course. That standard liner sucked. I don't think I ever published this mod. Cannot find it. It is one of the better CS models. Heavy. but sure to last. Glad to have it.
