Yay, someone brought the gun tread back up again! I actually dislike DAO pistols, if I want something DAO, I will get a S&W k frame for a sweeter trigger, not an auto. Owned a partial pre cocked 9mm (ADP pistol, which is called Stealth in the USA I think) and DAO space gun (H&K VP70Z, doesn't get more spacy that that). I much prefer DA/SA 9mm. For general everyday carry, I will go for Izhevsk MP446, very compact for a 19 shooter, owed one but sold it as we can't carry guns in Oz and it was no good for sport My only real complain was the upward eject (not exactly at right angle but close). For Summer, I would either get a Republic Arms RAP 401 (South African pistol kind of based on the Astra but single stack and frame made out of EN19 steel) I had one and carried one, it fed almost anything, or a Makarov (not in 9mm Luger but the title did not specify). I favor the Mak more as those things will shoot 2 inch group at 25 yards (extremely hard to do due to tiny sights and heavy trigger, I could do it if I take a 20 seconds break between shots but the hardware is capable). For Winter, it would either a Vektor SP1 (beefed up M92F with frame mounted safety), I had one as a house gun or a CZ75B. I like the CZ better as it is slimmer and also capable of 2 inch groups at 25 yards out of the box Now I am in Oz, gotta justify why I legally "need them", so my Makarov and CZ75B look like that now (note they 120mm barrels to make legal spec for sport) But well, before mod the Mak shot like that After mod, it shoots like this at 25 yr (Please don't comment on how impractical my Mak/Cz are now, I know. We can't carry here, they are my sport guns, I were allowed to carry, I would have two each, one unmod for carry and one for hole punching)

I have almost every pistol in 9x18 mak, and even a walther 9x18, whis ultra and not 9x18 mak. Really fun guns for me. I've even got a carry bulgy customized with a match grade barrel, wonder finish, and novak sights.

Wow! I believe they only made 2000 or some PP super in 9mm ultra... envy West German Makarov with better sights (yeah, I like Novak sights too, very low drag for the biggish sights) would be my conceal carry pistol of choice. I wonder why did they spend thousand of hours working on a pistol that is so accurate (even the Russian 4 grove and Chinese barrels will give 2-3inch group at 25yr) and reliable, then just banged a set tiny sights on..... even the current adjustable sight export models, the adjustment clicks are terrible (one click gives you 1.5 inches at 25yr and very wobbly) PLUS they retain the tiny front sight If it must be out of the box, a CZ83 is probably a better bet, having good sights and fairly sweet trigger. There were so common back in South Africa (in 380) but I have yet to see one in Oz. Well there they have/had semi auto, stock less versions of the CZ Skorpion (again in 380) too! I think the one 9x18 pistol I will trade 1/2 of my swords for is the Stechkin hehe, I have only seen pictures tho.

I had a CZ83 for a while. Nice gun but to use the double action, you had to lower the hammer manually. Also, the slide was very difficult for me to retract because there is little gripping surface. But that was true of a CZ 75 P01, as well as a few other pistols. I thought the Makarov was a really good pistol but they had a sharp kick, although that was hardly a reason not to have one.
As far as the sights go, I'd say the sights on all of those guns were typical for the period they were designed and they weren't designed as target guns. Moreover, the usual thinking at the time was that you weren't supposed to even spend a lot of time using the sights. That only changed, I think, sometime in the late 1960s or even later. The sights on S&W fixed sight revolvers in the 1950s (after the numbers were assigned) were perfectly adequate and in some ways, better than adjustable sights. A few handguns these days come with more than one rear sight, which is another approach to the situation.
Fads in handguns come and go. At one time, you would have been considered an amateur if you didn't have your revolver fitted out with a target hammer and a target trigger or trigger shoe. The more advanced handgunners put extended everything on their pistols. I don't know what the latest must-have might be but whatever it is, I don't have it.

Anyone care for "double-action only" pistols? There aren't many. Yes! I have a Sig P250sc in 45, KEl Tec P11, and Ruger LCP. The P250 has of the best DAO triggers I've ever felt. I prefer DA/SA and DAO actions to striker guns. Perhaps because I grew up shooting them alongside revolvers before striker guns really took off. I like the inherent safety of a longer deliberate trigger pull, and find that you can shoot them just as well as any other kind of handgun with practice. Practice is the key here, no matter what kind of action you shoot. And training even a little bit with a variety of platforms is infinitely valuable. HK's LEM triggers are neat too...

the adjustable mak sights were so bad because they were designed for an air rifle, for import points they simply walked to the next assembly line and grabbed handfuls of the airgun sights and took them back, measured out and then milled the slide for them and sold them to the US distributors. there is a company that made a nice fixed sight unit to replace those monstrosities. First thing i did was replace the one on my first IJ70. the double stack ones are interesting too, they'll take standard single stack mak mags, or the doubles interchangeably.

I really hate those sight, the cut out makes it do difficult to fit other dovetail style sights on.
Even the new Izh Viking had it, one of the reasons why I sold it quickly.
By the way I found the new Fab Defense grips great on the Mak, it has a lever that moves the mag catch to thrumb level but doesn't increase the width (the braver tail was dumb tho)

By the way, the whole thing about the 380 / 9x18 kicking too much has to do with weak recoil spring, leading to the slide hammering the frame too fast. A weaker spring (as long as it is strong enough to feed) makes lots of sense and the Cz82/3 and more so the Mak were designed to function with wide range of ammo, sometimes made in the backyard even. And they could be carried outside the great coat at -30 C and the gun could be totally lube free (as I was told by a Finnish ex mil bloke, guns were usualy lube free in super cold weather) or the lube has gone gummy. Too hard a spring may cause failure to eject so they traded some recoil control for reliability. As civilians in peace time who carry concealed (so the gun Is warm) or shoot for fun, we better off using a harder recoil spring. With 2 new surplus springs (one Russian one E german) I tried, the thing would cycle a load of 2.3gr trial boss and 102 gr swc (some 200fps slower than in spec load with same weight bullet) with 100% reliability over 2000 rounds I plinked away.
For my personal carry gun (If i could that it), I would pick tge ammo of choice, then find the heaviest recoil spring that will eject when I hold the gun with my weak hand and middle finger grip only.

I use wolf springs in my carry mak. I really like the smc 918 ppk copy made in Hungary. I've got all the variant of that including 2 that were tuned by the chief gunsmith of the importer for hi own use. He made the usual abysmal trigger into something really smoothand nice.

I saw a perfect Belgian High Power for $550 out-the-door at a recent gun show. I swear. I was broke, and sick about it. I really liked my Beretta 92, but of course I traded it in years ago. I'd like to have a CZ - those are great guns.

Yes, I like 9mm DA/SA and alloy/steel frames. I have a few 226es, a 5906,a beat up Beretta 92FS, and a few USP 9s. Had aN HK P30L. My go to is a USP 9 LEM, but the 226 has been a long time go to as well. I also like Glocks and strikers in general, but prefer DA/SA and hammer fired these days. DA/SA + hammer seems more versatile without any real drawbacks to me. Also been eyeing the CZ P07 and P09.
