Hey guys!
Was inspired to make a sort of spontaneous purchase of the United Cutlery Hobbit Sting replica (Not the Museum Collection, I found out about this line after I purchased the one from the standard line from a store that has a no return policy, naturally, #$%* @!%&!!!).
However the Museum Collection struck a chord. Have any of you ever done any mods to/disassembled any of these United Cutlery replicas? Doesn't have to be specific to Hobbit/LOTR experience, but would be preferable as it's what I'm dealing with here.
I realized that the hilt on the standard edition UC Hobbit Sting is of some sort of plastic (anybody else know?), but I was absolutely convinced it was wood somehow in the store upon handling it. And I had a thought: would it be difficult to craft a hilt of some sort of hardwood and basically swap it out after disassembling? Of course the wood would have to be a nice deep red wood like cocobolo or something, and stained, and one would have to think about a way to get the vine detail on it.
Has anybody ever attempted this? Curious of thoughts, processes things like that, tips for disassembling/reassembling, warnings, etc.
Thanks guys!
Daniel

I believe all of the UC LotR swords have threaded pommels so as far as disassembly goes it shouldn't be too hard to take it off and swap out the handle. If they're not threaded then their glued so you'd pretty much need to heat and soften the glue then pull off the pommel and after reassembly re-glue the pommel. If it's all glued together and or welded together your going to be dealing with more trouble than it's probably worth to disassemble it and probably should leave it as is.
As far as what to use if you don't want to get to pricy on wood you could always do a mahogany stain and a little lacquer to simulate. As far as the silver inlay, get a stencil and paint it over the stain then lacquer.
