More a Bourbon man myself, but I drink to the sentiment...gulp. I drank bourbon until a sailor introduced me to rum. Being a bourbon man I thought you might get a kick out of this. It's a bit off subject and I would have sent via PM but couldn't find an Attachment button. MEOW! Pfffftt.

I think thrusting with medium shield would be the XIV strength, as you can still hide the tip behind the shield and achieve great reach, power and control of the 26" blade with each stab. Difficult to block, grab, stop, see that jab coming, and it would be a long time before I couldn't do the "sewing machine" maneuver (stab, stab, stab) due to fatigue. Reminds me of how a Roman would use a Gladius and shield. Having a shield cover you to get inside and then give a few good stabs. Extreme similarity, but with more reach with the XIV. Gladius would allow more swinging freedom.

Update, three years waiting but finally have a cutting video,
Tried to add it to the review but it wouldn't let me without deleting half the pictures. Figured I'd leave the pics and just post it to the thread.

Nddave is that you doing the cutting? I haven’t accumulated many bottles but you give the desire to try my XIV and I might very well do that this morning in conjunction with my new shield to see how the work together. I've only used a buckler and my heater shield and prefer my new round centre grip shield to those.

I cut yesterday with three of my swords, this one, the Hero's Warsword and the Homildon Hill. I've been saving up bottles since I did the video of the Culloden, still have around 30 left still and will be using them for a few more videos after I get my prize from the giveaway tomorrow. It was a lot of fun, got this nice pic at the end while I was cleaning up. It was an order of small, medium and extra large yesterday, lol.

Thanks, more of those would've happened but I knocked the crap out of the stand with the Warsword and it was quite wobbly by the time I started cutting with the XIV. For such a broad sword the XIV has a mean point that's for sure, I was surprised I was able to get the consecutive thrusts in that two liter at the beginning of the video and then the clean cut to finish.

As I said earlier you gave me the urge to cut with my XIV. So I satisfied that with the curiosity of using that with my new round shield. Previously I had only fanned air using the Agincourt and that shield. There is a difference in the two swords. The longer Agincourt is impossible to hide behind the shield and works one way, the shorter XIV another. For example I found it possible to stick my shield with the XIV, emphasizing its wicked point. Can’t say which is best only different. Rather than distract from your video I posted mine in under the review on the shield sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/54709/new-centre-grip-shield?page=2 . It’s rather brief, don’t blink. Hehe

Emmett is kind of in a bowl of foothills. 100 miles north is McCall which is in more central Idaho and it's all evergreen. But pretty much my area is high plains desert and foothills. It's not bad u less you have a sagebrush allergy, lol. Nice video, not a bad combo with the round shield. As we discussed before, it's very remenicent of how a Roman would use a Gladius and shield. Cover up get close and strike.

Hey y’all, I just want to say that I absolutely appreciate this thread and all the excellent information herein regarding this remarkable piece of steel. I’m happy to report that I just nabbed one of these guys myself from the last place I thought I’d be able to find it: Windlass Steelcrafts!
So yeah, this thread is about 4 years old and MRL has this item listed as discontinued but by contacting Windlass directly they sent me a brand new sword! Looks like they might be eliminating the last of their inventory—act now and get yours!
