Hey guys, I had started a sword re-grip build along on the construction forum and it's been fun to show off the what I'm working on. So when Scott told me about this archery section, I figured I'd show off the bows I'm building/built. Here is a longbow I built on commission. She wanted it 63" 35lbs @ 25" draw. She wanted it bright red, so I did so with Keda analine dye. Here is a few of the arrows I made for her with the bow. I make the arrows on a special jig I made using bearings and a router. The square stock is spun with a drill. The handle is bird's-eye maple (some of the nicest I've ever found) with a strip of ebony. Here is the front of the bow, with my logo. The logo was done with a cheap metallic sharpie (the only type that clear coat doesn't melt). And the back. I did the filigree with a brush and acrylic paint. It was honestly one of the most difficult creative things I've done, because the acrylic paint doesn't cover very well at all. Thanks for looking guys! I'll hopefully have pictures of the current project up soon.

Here's a picture of the tip riser. Also ebony. I don't have a pic of it after the bow was dyed. Bow is made of oak, with a hickory backing.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. That red came out really pretty.

That's really cool and impressive. I've been thinking about getting into archery and was only this morning looking at ordering a Bear super grizzly recurve, but I got a bit lost with all the addons I would need.

Thanks guys, really.

Sadly, I was rushed to get it to her and never got a chance. I'm supposed to get it back for a photo shoot soon, so hopefully I'll get them posted.
Bows are terribly to photograph I've found. They're definitely not like swords in that regard.

That looks wonderful. Are the arrows self nocked?

ScottThey are self knocked. Normally I do a Hardwood insert or wrapping to reinforce the knock. But she already told me that she would never fly the arrows. So I did paint instead. They are hickory shafts, so I'd be suprised if they needed much reinforcement. I use two hack saw blades taped together to get the initial shape, but it still comes down to a ton of filing.

Here is some pictures of the arrows I made myself. I honestly think these are more impressive than the bows I make. Hickory shafts, with ebony footing and nock insert. With my family crest by the fletching.

Really nice footed arrows. I eventually want to get some footed arrows or build some.

Those arrows are impressive. Do they fly well?

They are on the heavy side. So they fly really well from my 60lbs bow and not as well from my 40lbs.
They hit really hard though. It's almost problematic for normal practice.
Some of the best flying arrows I've made with 3/8 pine shafts, 125g heads. They are so light they seem to rise.

PaulThey definitely don't make it easy, buying your first bow. If your interested in the sport, I'd say go for it. There's something very rewarding about nailing a target 50 yards away with an arrow. Something that shooting a gun doesn't do for me anymore. If you have any questions about archery, feel free to hit me up. Everyone here has been so helpful with my sword projects, I'd like to return the favor, if needed.

Nice tillering on that bow. What you used as insert in that 'riser'?

Derzis Thanks. Tiller in for me is always a long process. I use a belt sander and palm sander for most of it. It's a strip on ebony I got at a local "exotic wood yard". They sell off scraps for cheap, so I always score big when I go there. It's natural and undyed.

Welcome :) Doing a bow is hard, even if for some is just bending a branch and going for it. And from that image I can see you know your art (doing a bow requires knowledge and requires artist eyes). Very nice. You make your shelf flat or a bit roundish? I couldn't see it from the pics

It has a radius. I learned the hard way how important they are when shooting arrows with wrapped fletching.
And your right, first bow was an experience with many different skills at work.
