For that price, I'd say you'll get a nice camping/choppy/beater blade. And you can beat the living snot out of 1045 TH wakizashi length blades.

I'll probably get one to review at some point, but not right now. I really want to see some better pictures of the blade.

Looks like something to review against some other low dollar wakizashis. Maybe I'll do that.

That'd be awesome! I don't have any low cost wakizashis to compare it to, so that'd work out well. Then I could post my own review providing this forum with two reviews; a straightforward singular review and a comparative review, giving ample info on it. When I get mine, I'll probably reprofile the blade and cut the handle down to 5-6 inches.

Just received my ten ryu tactical wakizashi. It arrived last Sunday, but I couldn't pick it up until now. First impressions... dang this sword is thick! 1/4 inch thick blade up to the very tip. No distal taper to make it sturdier for tactical application. It's very sturdy and has a little heft. It's a good weight and easily wielded with both one or two hands. The geometry is good and has a nice sharp convex edge. The fit to the scabbard is perfect. My only gripe is that the handle is a little too square for my preferences, but that is easily fixed as the handle is wood. I don't like the lanyard because it's only usable if your hand is on the very end. I really like this blade out of the box. I'll try to write up a full review this weekend, and I'll test it's "Tactical" applications.

I'm considering the tactical katana offered by ten ryu.

Sorry, but I don't have a video yet. I've been taking care of my dad while he's recovering from surgery. I really like the tactical wakizashi, and i say if you like it, get it. It's a great deal for $50. Cuts well through bottles, paper, and brush. It does have some cosmetic issues, but nothing that affects function

Okay, that sounds good. I'm just a little wary since I've seen a few cutting reviews on the ten ryu blades and they seem relatively sturdy until the user cuts a hard object with poor technique and bends the blade out of shape. I may go ahead and pull the trigger on this purchase like you did, I just wish there were a few more reviews out there on this version specifically.

I've been meaning to write a full review, but I just haven't had the time. Glad you decided to go with it. I think you'll like the sword. If something happens, SOM has pretty good customer service

Also, I believe these blades are meant for softer targets because of the lower carbon content level. However, these blades are pretty thick, so I don't think you'll have much issues with it bending. The edge may roll on harder targets, but its pretty easy to sharpen

Okay, awesome. I'm actually still holding out to see if I can find anything else that may be of higher carbon content with a similar price tag, but so far it seems like the ten ryu is my best bet. I'm not too familiar with the process of sharpening the blade, but I suppose with a price tag like that, it's more than enough incentive to learn.

Have you ever handled one of the cold steel products, possibly the katana machete, and would you say the durability is anywhere near the same?

I've not held the original katana machete, but I imagine that it handles differently. I have, however, handled their new tactical katana machete, and it is quite a bit lighter and faster due to the thinner blade. However, I didn't like the molded handle. The molded ito was abrasive on the hands and didn't feel right. It handled like a machete. If you are looking for more of a katana, get the Ten Ryu. If not, get the cold Steel and file down the abrasive parts on the handle.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll probably spend a few more days thinking it over, but I'm definitely leaning towards the ten ryu. I'm curious as to if the 1045 blade they use on the tactical model is the same they use for the other blades at the similar price point.

Are there any other tactical blades in the lower price range that you would recommend ? Since buying a tachi has been put off until I manage to find one worth buying I am now thinking about enlarging my short blades collection, specifically with a tanto and a wakizashi. Doesn't need to be beautiful or any of that traditional stuff (differential hardening, expensive koshirae, ...), but something that can be put to use (for instance, we have a couple of handforged Nepal Kukris that we use for wood cutting and meat preparation) and can take some punishment. In other words, it needs to be sharp out of the box, have decent fittings and be able to hold an edge.

Condor has some nice quality swords for under $100. If you wait, budk usually has 25%-30% off coupons. I believe that they are running a 25% off sale through this evening. Just be sure to buy quality brands. Their shipping is fast though.
