Just watched the first episode on History's website, gonna record the second on on DVR tomorrow and watch it... but am going to share a few observations. Josh just psyched himself out. Yes, he got unlucky being SO close to a bear family... but honestly, black bears as long as your careful are not as dangerous as some people think they are. He just got in his own head too much and freaked out. WTF was Sam Larson doing... basically summoning the wolves? My father raised wolf hybrids, I was almost literally raised by wolves... calling attention to yourself be howling to them... BAD idea. :-( It seems obvious from the choices the contestants made with their 10 items that they were required to select the items from a specific list. There was a lot more overlap in items then I would have expected otherwise. I found myself wondering why no one went for the sleeping method my father and I used when camping in the forest in Oregon... which is a tree hammock. Super easy to set up, keeps you off the wet cold ground so your heat isn't sucked out of you, set up a tarp over you to keep the rain off you... comfy as hell. Look forward to seeing the next episode... its a very interesting concept. While yes they had a master list of 40 items. Think a bit about what you would take on such a trip and you only get 10 items. Many items will always be pretty universally chosen. ferro rod Sleeping bag Knife (only 1 person opted for no knife, Josh only had an axe for a blade) Axe cooking pot cordage (5 people opted for no 550 cord using their fishing line instead, obviously picking a multi use item over single) Tarp (shelter), though 4 choose not to add ones to their lists due to they got two tarps as freebies that didn't count to their list. A 12X12 and 5X7 which came with the camera equipment and they were allowed to use them. Not including the tarp that is 6 items that pretty much would be universal choices. With the tarp it is 7 items. After that pretty universal is items to procure food. Fishing line and hooks, gill net, bow and arrows, sling shots, etc. And it is wise to have more than one of these. That all 10 people picked fishing line and hooks it pretty telling. And they all picked some other item besides that as a food procurement. So that takes up 2 more slots on the list bringing the universal items up to 8-9. With only 1-2 slots left for random items not a lot of room for variation. I think more would have opted for the water bottle/canteen, saw, or emergency rations if they had a larger list than 10 items. But narrowing down to 10 is hard when 8-9 is taken up with essential items. But those would all be pretty popular normally.

BTW Chris is the author Angry American that wrote the Going Home Series. A post apocalyptic fiction series that has been getting a lot of praise in the prepper community. Kind of kills his credibility that he quit so quickly. Oh well, guess the Angry American doesn't fare so well in Canada. I'll probably watch this just because it's a change from HC's usual AmericanAlienPawnSwampPicker lineup. I am sure he will be getting a lot of grief about that one. Though also sure his come back will be he is never unarmed and the show removed him from his firarms, so it was not a true test of his preparedness. Or something to that effect. And in someways, that is true. This was a contest with limits on the items you could bring. However him dropping out so quickly and us not seeing him really do anything in the show other than quit will likely hurt his reputation quite a bit. I cut both him and Josh a bit of slack. Both were used to having firearms all the time. Both were unused to the dangerous animals. They both psyched themselves out of the game by blowing out of proportion what they couldn't see in the night. But for people used to carrying guns, and not used to dangerous animals I can understand how their fear might get to them. I had a deer walk straight up to me once. I am not ashamed to admit I got scared. It was bigger than me with sharp hooves and I was unarmed, until I reached down and picked up a stick as a makeshift weapon. That was a deer, not a bear, not a wolf. A deer. Of course part of what scared me was the uncharacteristic behavior, deer don't normally walk straight to you out in the woods. But hopefully you get the point that us humans without our weapons become pretty defenseless pretty quick and that can get to some people who are used to being armed. Personally I hope Chris takes away from this experience that he needs to learn not to be so heavily dependent on firearms for safety.

That IS odd behavior for a deer. When I was younger, I had an obsession with the idea of getting a deer to let me approach it and pet it. They are SO skittish and alert, its pretty damn unlikely, but I tried for years. One time I got (I thought) VERY close... and then the deer charged me. Freaked me out.
What I could not see from my angle was it had two fawns with it was protecting. :-P

Yep mammas can get pretty protective.
My experience was odd, I was walking in the woods and saw the deer walking parallel to me about 20-30 feet to my right. It noticed me, and turned to me and started walking straight to me. When it got about 2-3 feet from me is when I picked up the stick. We just stared at each other for awhile I talked to it a bit. It just seemed curious. A few times I considered reaching out to pet it, but the odd behavior had me spooked. It seemed to have no fear at all of me. So I told it to go away and I started walking away, and it just casually walked over to a clearing and started to graze.
Since then I have noticed I have had a lot of animals approach me, possum, raccoons, squirrels, even birds seem to like me. I also seem to attract children. Little kids seem to love me. So I suspect maybe I have a genetic pheromone or something that makes animals and kids trust me. Since my Mom and my daughter are the same way with kids. Neither spend much time in the woods though so don't have similar animals experiences.

I like and agree with pretty much everything Ineff and Sean pointed out in the last couple posts- but it just takes too long to make a a full reply to specific quotes on my cell.
I will say that with the list to choose from the 5 other items i would have chosen are: knife, bow, ground tarp, net, bivy.

I'll have to download this series sounds really good. I checked my pay TV and no sign of it yet. Yeah over on BCUSA a lot of the Canadians have had issue finding the show. I guess the Website doesn't have international viewing yet. However I did hear they were going to start international episodes the end of June or beginning of July. But not sure how that works. Is there an Australian History Channel website? I know there is a HistoryAsia, but that site doesn't have the episodes on it yet, and it shows they don't get the show airing until June 29th. It does however have previews the main US channel doesn't. www.historyasia.com/shows/aloneYou might want to check with HistoryAsia Paul on the 30th or July 1st to see if they have the 1st episode up?

You can see the ones that are going to quit right from the start, they're the ones who are feeling sorry for themselves already. Got a kick out of the guy who saw the bear in the tree and started running. Nothing sets off a wild animals attack trigger faster than running from it. This show is going to be fun to watch.

I just went to History channels website and watched the first episode. One of the things I see in promos and in the first two episodes that they guys are saying is the biggest problem... would be the least of my concerns... the solitude. Being alone. That seems to really bug most people... but I've always been a hermit. Sometimes when my wife is deployed overseas and we don't see each other for months or even over a year... I'll just kinda vanish from sight for weeks or months, not really talk to anyone. I've done this all my life. I love my alone time. I'd LOVE the solitude the guys up there got. My biggest concern would be find food, staying dry so as not to get hypothermia... and cougars. ;-)

LOL, I completely agree Sean. If your someone who can't handle being alone for a few weeks to a few months then why go on the show in the first place? My only thought is that they must have picked at least some of these guys for that specific reason, to up the drama. Me personally I could easily spend months alone without seeing anyone else and be perfectly fine. I have in fact done it. I have no problem going solo camping for two weeks and not seeing anyone the entire time.

I got a kick out of the guys who's eyes were popping out of their heads when they heard the Wolves howling. I think that's the most beautiful sound you will ever hear in the woods.

Yup, I love solitude. The idea of just heading out into the forest and seeing if I can make it long term is kinda never too far from my mind. I love the idea of being alone on the wild for a long time

I'm sure they wanted everything turned up to 11... so they may have put some research into making sure the guys they picked would be as uncomfortable as possible... to make for better TV.

As I've mentioned before... I grew up around wolves. My father would take em out into the woods to run and play, sometimes to eat (they took down some deer and small game) and when I would go looking for them... I'd howl and the wolves would howl back... I'd track that sound for a while but typically one or more of the wolves would find me before I found my dad... and they would lead me to him. Wolves howling is one of my favorite sounds in the world.

Who would have thought Wolfgard and Shadowhowler would like wolves. I too enjoy the wolf howl. Or the coyote yip. And the may other sounds of animals in nature. Those people who claim that the wilderness is quiet and peaceful must have been making a pretty loud racket to scare all the animals into being quiet, because my experience has always been the wilderness is pretty loud with all the life out there. In the 1st episode they sort of made it seem like Mitch was afraid of the wolf howls. But in episode 2 they show he is sort of meh, to actually enjoying them. So there seems to be some definate editiing to build a dramatic narrative of dangerous animals. While at the same time showing that some of the people overcome this fear.

I think it was just that creative editing thing tv likes to do. I figured the scene with Mitch responding to the howls was him either noting sudden repeated howling, or maybe even him noting that some dummy was howling to the wolves lol
