First designed in 1809 to be equipped the year after, the Russian pallasch 1809 was made after the dragoon sword 1806 but with more ''cuirassier'' touch to it, mostly the double-fullered blade.
The heavy cavalry was equipped with these when Napoleon set out his disastrous campaign in 1812 and from the pursuit of the retreating French came in contact with the Prussians who initiated their war of liberation in 1813.
When Napoleon was finally defeated the year after the Prussian cavalry started to equip itself with Russian weapons and thus the 1809 was to be adopted as the new pattern for the cavalry in 1819.
The Russian broadsword/pallasch for heavy cavalry distinguished itself by its unusual form which had 2 rather than the standard 3 sidebars that connected directly to the flat angular guard which had a square and flat quillon end and by its narrow-waisted round pommel cap,
The handle was composed of straight leather wrapped grip with brass wire, the blades (for all ranks) were straight and double-fullered with a spear/center point, the scabbard had two hangers.
In 1819 this sword was also adopted by the Prussian cavalry whose form remained basically the same. The Prussian officer version had a more curved fish/sharkskin grip and its pommel was flat.
This type of sword is not extremely rare but is very sought after by collectors and are sold for big money (last one I saw 2 weeks ago was a dated 1835 model who sold for 2500euros). I was lucky enough to have found this one in a very obscure German auction house who sold it for 350 euros. No numbers or date so it is hard to identify its origin (Russian or Prussian) so off to study the Gerd Maier books.
Handling of the sword is superb, very easy to control, well balanced and very light compared to all the other broadswords despite its massive weight and dimensions, I understand why these are so popular with collectors.
