The sabre I won on eBay arrived today. It is infinitely more beautiful in person. Photos do not do it justice. The entire rear 1/3-1/2 of the blade is beautifully engraved, with some gilding. Near the hilt is what appears to be the officer's name. If this is true, I will be spending quite a bit of time researching this sword. The blade is marked Solingen. The grip appears to be horn, and was at one point wrapped in double stranded brass wire. I would like to replace the wire if anyone knows how. The sword fits my M1822 trooper scabbard well, so I may look around for a repro scabbard for this sword. The blade will need some minor cleaning, but it has been service sharpened, so I may do some light cutting. First though, I will need to replace the leather washer, as the original is missing. This sword has just become my favourite! I must apologize for the quality of the photos. Not up to par, but the lighting is the best I have in the house at the moment.

Pictures shall come. I have to get my phone camera working with the lighting on my dining room table first...

Hrm, must have hit the wrong button. The perils of posting from a mobile! Can a mod move it to the correct board? William Swiger?

Need to transfer your shots to a pic saving service so you can walk them into the forum. Can't explode these to see the blade detail. Solingen made I presume from the work. This may be later than 1816. The barrel shape of the pipeback looks more "english" and may just be an 1822 with a german blade. Either case it is a smashing good looking officer sabre.

Is there an image saving service you recommend? The blade is indeed Solingen, and it is inscribed as such on the other side of the blade from the inscription that I can't read. Do you have any experience with replacing grip wire? I'll need a new leather washer as well. Thankfully I think I can make a repro 1822 or Ames scabbard work, because it fits my 1822 trooper beautifully.

1. Wiring. I don't have the tools to mess with a peened hilt. Can't finish the wiring as it goes under the pommel cap. Somebody out in the Chicago area restores swords. Can't find the name. Tom Nardi out in CA does Civil War sabres. Tom Nardi sells washers. Might be able to worry an US M1833 washer onto your sabre. 2. Scabbards: Guy on ebay sells replica M1840 scabbards. www.ebay.com/itm/A-QUALITY-STEEL-AMES-SCABBARD-FOR-1840-HEAVY-CAVALRY-SWORD-WRISTBREAKER-/2314998698603. There was a rant about photo services in the cafe recently. I've been using photobucket so long I'm vetted to it by sheer volumne. There are others mentioned in the thread. All allow you to insert into this site.

Thanks Dave! I've contacted Tom Nardi. Hopefully the lack of ingenuity in the US Ordnance Department will work out in my favour and he will be able to restore it based on his experience with Ames heavies.

Here is my attempt at embedding a Photobucket photo for Dave Kelly to look at. This is the inscription I mentioned. Also, Tom Nardi will be restoring the sword. I will be sending it sometime next month.
