Off topic a bit: I don't get why people drink cows and goats milk no worries. But when you offer them to try some milk off a friend whos just had a baby they get all grossed out and won't. Most likely some social taboo with sexual overtones. Probably wouldn't bother me if I knew the lady in question. But not from a stranger. Anyway, back on topic. There are several topics that deal with this subject on SFI and myArmoury. I asked about them last year and was politely pointed to them. If you read the threads, the crazy totally unrelated replies started flying from one particular member. All kinds of ad hominem attacks on the original poster, ranged from insinuating he was some sort of deviant to an out-and-out liar. About the only attack that was overlooked was child molester. Apparently this topic gets some riled up. But it seems to me that a dead animal is a dead animal. Whether they are used for sword testing or leather for shoes or steak at the $100-a-plate high class restaurant, what difference does it make? They are already dead. And in the case of animals that have died of disease or old age, they really can't be used for anything else except feeding the scavengers. Makes sense to try to learn something from their death. But that's just the way I see it. Others, it seems, certainly disagree vehemently.

I don't hunt, tho I got no problem with it. I just find it more convenient to get my meat from the store. I don't endorse killing for killings sake, but I figure there is plenty animals that will devour me if giving the chance so I don't suffer any qualms, hell I'd probably eat a human if it was legal and they were prepared properly. Milk puts me off no matter what the source.

I don't disagree, but I think that we can better ourselves to some degree. It's human nature to physically fight - yet that is typically illegal.

I don't disagree, but I think that we can better ourselves to some degree. It's human nature to physically fight - yet that is typically illegal. That assumes that abstaining from eating meat "betters ourselves" in some way. I see how you see it that way. Others disagree. ON TOPIC: King Richard's Cutting ContestThat sounds like an interesting challenge. I would think cleanly severing a camel's head with a single blow would be a considerable challenge. But definitely not impossible. And I guess it would depend considerably on whether any two-handed swords were allowed, or if they were restricted to single-handers. Seems to me that hand-n-a-half and two handed swords were not very common around that time period. It would take skill and good technique. And likely a bit of luck in the choice of the camel. I'd want one that would stand still and not flinch when he saw the blade start to move toward him. Sounds like just the kind of thing a bunch of bored knights would come up with.

Shooter,
I am in agreement with you. Dead is dead. there is no consciousness, and the living thing in question has ceased to be a soul when breath left it.
Does this mean that we should go around killing for testing purposes? HMMMM. A very hard question to answer correctly. If there is an animal that is very sick, or has become a threat to humans, and cannot be cured, we usually put it out of its misery. Whether with a bullet or by euthanization via drugs. In this case, it is a question of whether or not there is suffering experienced during the life taking process. What can we deal with as individuals in the name of science? what is going to be done with the "meat" after we are done slicing it up? Are we just slicing it up to see if we can do it?
There are so many questions to be answered by this subject, no one person will be of the same thought train as another.
We should not judge each other by someones choice, because only that person knows thier true motivation.
Me personally, ehhhh, it does not bother me when testing like this is done. We all know that the Japanese used to test blades on prisoners, etc. and we all have really expressed no horror to that fact. I am very interested in what my katana will cut, and would be lying if I said, "Well, I just have this to cut bottles. " If it could be used to defend my life or family, it would be in a heartbeat. This has thoroughly been discussed in another thread. But how will I have confidence in it when I haven't seen what it can do in as close to that situation as I can get?
You vegetarians and persons who would be offended by this type of thing out there, I admire your commitments and your sensitivities to the issues like this. But we who eat meat or are less sensitive to those same animals are no less human than you are, maybe just more curious. It takes all kinds.
And if it weren't for us, there would be roving herds of killer cows. ;D
Im off the soapbox brothers. Who's next?
Farmer

Just to clear this up: In Japan, the swords were used on the bodies of executed (recently dead) prisoners. Source: Tameshigiri by Toshishiro Obata. No evidence of official use of living people or animals for testing.

I'm sort of new at the whole vegies only type of life, but as I see it, I really don't care if others want to eat what they wish. I only have control of myself and I don't feel the need to cause harm to living things. Scream, carrots, scream.
I still hold little animosity towards hunters because I recognize that their killing of animals is a necessary evil. I just would prefer not to take part in it.

Kort, How were they executed? Just curious. I had heard that it was beheading with a sword. I had always just assumed it would have been katana. Maybe I should do more reading and less speculating, huh? Oh and Rammy, All veggies? All the time? How about dairy? Cause there are vegetarians and then there are vegans????I think they are called. Remember to have a good old slice of meat every now and then, for your good old beef farmin' brother up here in VA. ;D

Maybe I should do more reading and less speculating, huh? Yeah, more reading, less speculating. From memory: Typically those of the samurai class (unless their crimes were particularly heinous) were executed by a single cut to the back of the neck. This was not a time for test-cutting. The other classes were often executed by being crucified and skewered by a couple of spears, if memory serves. Test-cutting, back in the day, was primarily done to test the sword, and it was a separate profession. The famous story is of a test-cutter taunting a condemned criminal, who then swallowed some rock to ruin the sword.
