Hey all! I had promised when I received my Hanwei Renshu I'd post a review, so here it is.
Full Disclosure
I ordered this sword from Swords Of Might and got a 10% discount by using the SBG code. I am not affiliated with Swords of Might nor am I getting anything from doing a review of this sword.
Statistics
Blade length: 27 1/2" from the ha machi
Handle length: 12"
Overall length: 39 3/4"
Weight: 1lb 15oz
POB: 5'' from tsuba
So I ordered this on 31 December and received it today on 3 January. SoM are pretty quick on processing orders. The packaging was so so as it came double boxed and inside the inner box there were foam inserts that firmly held the sword. However that same box rattled about the inside of the shipping box. This wasn't too big of an issue as the sword arrived undamaged.
Now for the important stuff, the sword itself.
What can I say but the fact that it is light and weighs exactly the same as my iaito which is a Hanwei Nami. The tsuka is still on the axe handle side but not quite to the degree that the Raptor is. It has the same ito as the Raptor as well. The menuki I thought were pretty neat with the whole ken theme as you can see in the pic below but I thought the tsukamaki was a little sloppy but tight. I really didn't expect much though at this price point so this isn't a disappointment.
Now lets take it apart and check under the hood. Well, here she be in all her glory. The munemachi and hamachi are even which is great and the habaki fit is nice and tight. There were burrs on the nakago which I promptly filed off. The kissaki is still just as thin as Mr. John Walter pointed out in his video review of the prototype.
For the inside of the tsuka, it is shimmed. That I wasn't so keen on but at least it fits tightly. I couldn't capture it in the pictures but the fuchi is a skosh crooked. That's because the tsuka was cut crooked. Methinks this was a Friday sword.
A good feature that I found was the peened seppa dai so no rattle in the tsuba department.
The saya was nice with a rough ishime finish. No finger prints or shifting much in the obi.
So overall, its not a bad sword and would really shine with customization which I will do myself. Bottom line is would I recommend this sword, yeah as it seems like it will be a good cutter. I haven't cut with it yet as the weather here is nasty but I did do the obligatory paper cutting test and it passed.
Thanks for reading!
